The thread on the sleeper civic got me thinking. (yes, a slow laborious process) Not wanting to threadjack, here it is. What would it take to put that d16z6 into a 97 Civic with the D16y7? Can it use the y7 tranny? Needs the z6 computer? Axles the same? I've got one here and a 97 Civic with a blown motor, a 89 Crx, and a 80 Civic all staring at me and saying me! me! me! I have no idea how how they got here, but I have to do something with them. I'm leaning towards the 97 but wonder if it is more complicated to put a slightly older motor into a newer car (obd1 v obdII and all that other stuff), vs. putting it in an older model. An old Civic with a d16 with a turbo would be a pretty nice sleeper though. Thoughts, advice, direction?
No harder to put the older motor in the newer car these days. Just need OBD1 jumper harness, really.
Don't need to change axles or trans.
Would be SLIGHTLY easier to get a Y8 in there, though, but that would only eliminate the need for the jumper harness. (Which you'd want anyways if you wanted to tune on the cheap with Crome.)
The Z6 will bolt in, you can use the Y7 trans and axles. Wiring is a bit different as the OBD2 cars have the crank sensor down on the crankshaft itself under the timing covers and the OBD1 cars have all 3 sensors in the distributor. I'm not sure if the OBD2 ECU can talk to the OBD1 distributor, but a Y7 ECU won't have an output/maps for VTEC anyways so it makes much more sense to convert to OBD1. To convert to an OBD2 crank sensor you'd have to swap oil pumps, and the OBD2 oil pumps don't flow as well as the OBD1 ones.
