I've seen a few rolling around lately and they have really grown on me. They are at least proportional unlike the 500 which looks like an Aztec pyramid made babies with the michelin man/

Saw one in the parking structure when I was at the Autorama and it was all blacked out with black steelie wheels and big knobby snow tires looking completely bad ass like it had just crossed the arctic circle or something. Like my STi's little brother. Love at first sight. Haven't driven one, but I will when the turbo comes on board. You could totally rock the Casbah in that thing. Did I mention I am hot for the Nissan Cube and Juke too? No lie. I like 'em weird.
At least you are consistent in your love for incredibly ugly examples of poor design.
Oh geeez......there is one in every crowd.

You mean someone that actually cares about aesthetics? If so, guilty as charged.

There is funky and there is poor design. The Aztek was poor design, the velostar funky

Actually, for its intended purpose, the Aztek was a pretty good design. Aesthetically, however, it was a mess.

Amen brother. My thoughts exactly. Looks are completely subjective and just because it may be ugly to some and have a funky half door does not make it poorly engineered or ill conceived. It's clearly not for everybody. Automotive history has shown that the oddball cars typically don't last long and more generic, middle of the road cars do so it may not be around long anyway, in the mean time I like it.

Subjective to some extent-especially to those with zero training or exposure to good design. Good design stands the test of time as evidenced by automotive masterpieces designed decades ago that still look "right" today. I consider this Veloster to be a gobbed-up example of gimicky design that draws attention to itself-sure-but, for all the wrong reasons. Sadly, it drives poorly as well, in its current form-eliminating any rational reason to own the thing.

Bumping 'cause I passed one of these on the freeway today. Must say, they look really good in black with that little turbo badge

They're growing on me, as well - and I haven't spotted a turbo yet!

+1. I sorta liked them at first. I really like them now.

By that measure, the best design is the E39.

the Aztek was a pretty good design

Yeah, if it wasnt for everything under the hood i would honestly like them a a fair bit.. I like driving them but wouldnt want to own one for mechanical reasons. The interior really fits the intended image and works, imo.

Im pretty close to agreeing with that. It's amazing how those things STILL have a bit of 'visual prestige' after all these years. Honestly, the last three 5-series have been what i would characterize as very good visual design on the exterior, although i dont like the headlights on the current one near as much as the rest of the car. I still find the taillights of the last generation slightly entrancing when im behind one on the road.

Hyundai had a lot of their cars at the Borgata last week for a big sales meeting. Got to sit in the Gensis Coupe, Elantra Coupe, Elantra GT, and The Velostar.

Out of them all.. I prefered the Genesis (obviously) but prefered the Elantra GT over the Velostar. The Velostar was in a matt gray metallic (an optional colour) with a black interior. While I loved the interior and the hatchback with side rear door.. the exterior is kind of a mess.

Hyundai used the lights (front and rear) hide/make vents in the bodywork.. and I am not sure any of them worked (visually or physically) but in the matt gray under the theatrical lighting.. just did not look good.. which is a shame, I like the basic shape of the car.. but in my eyes, it is let down in the (too many) details

BTW. the rear window is two pieces of glass. It rolled off of the truck with the fake C/F spoiler in the trunk to avoid people pressing on it and breaking it when rolling it around

I agree. Seems cool-ish at first, but the more you look at it, the more it looks like crappy design as Forza said.

Honestly, i'd vastly prefer a CR-Z.

Recently bought a new car. Looked at the Veloster cause I liked the way it looked. Roomy for me at 6'3" 250 lbs. Looks well made. Didn't drive it because as a regular AutoXer I don't like FWD. So bought a Miata and really like it, especially after all the mods like Ohlins, etc.
