I saw an 85 F-250 for sale, that the owner said he was driving and it suddenly died, and the fuse for the glow plugs, shutoff valve and I believe the started too was blown, and will blow again after a few minutes of driving.  Any idea what could be wrong with it?  The seller didn't know, and if I wanted to buy it I would have to get it running to drive it home because it's far enough away I could just buy a better one for cheaper than towing this one.

Good chance it needs glow plus or glow plug harness.

The only thing that can stop it running is to turn the fuel or air off. If the air filter is clean then it is a filter or the shutoff solenoid. Usually those need 12 volts to hold the fuel supply open so if you jump it right from the battery it should stay running.

It sounds like that's exactly the issue, it looses power to the shutoff solenoid.  It probably wouldn't be too hard to get started but I'd probably just have to leave it running the whole time for the 3 hour drive home.

I had a IDI a few years back where glow plug harness and fuel shut off harness melted together.

It has been since the early 90s since I had one, but I thought the fuel shut off was a servo valve.  Instead of a solenoid which needs constant 12v to hold it open, I thought it was a servo... like a power door lock actuator.  12v one way for a moment pushes the thing open, and 12v the other way for a moment closes it.

Am I thinking of another diesel?

I have never dug into the 6.9. I just know they are dumb diesels and that if they turn off they must have lost their fuel supply, or have an air issue. On two Cats and a 6.5 I have pulled the stop solenoid completely to keep them running after electrical issues.

Disconnect anything related to the fuses blowing

Wire from the + batt terminal to the fuel solenoid on the injection pump.

Jump the starter solenoid with a screwdriver, jump in, and roll.

I think the fuel shutoff is a solenoid. Easy test is to pull the connector while running. If it is a servo, it should stay running, if it's a solenoid it would shut off.
