Eh . . . Supposedly this isn't the first rime Ford did this. I also don't believe this will last long since Penske is taking over DJR without some backing from Ford (yeah I know FPR is currently the only Ford factory supported team).
So Holden won!
Eat that Ford fans, taste it, savor it. Yeah! I'm so excited!
Now if the rest of Ford would follow FPR's lead and fold up shop the world would be a much better place

It's not America turning its back on motorsports. It's Ford (corporate) making the decision to walk away from a great rear-wheel-drive platform that the Falcon (in Australia) uses. Instead of seeing the potential to use it (along with a great turbo-charged inline 6), and exporting it around the world to steal sales from BMW and Mercedes, they decide to make lame FWD vehicles like the Taurus. Booooo. So supporting the RWD V8 Supercar platform is no longer seen to be supporting sales. I'm sure a few years after the Falcon is killed off, Ford will decide that there is demand for a RWD platform after all...

Pretty sure the Taurus outsold almost everything you compared it to. Just saying...
This isn't about chasing a small percentage of the market. If you look at world sales numbers, BMW and MB are barely a footnote.
Also keep in mind, the best selling car in the US is a truck and the best selling in the world is a FWD beigemobile.
Let's see...they sold more F-series pickups this month than all aussie cars combined. The writing was on the wall here. The Falcon was already announced to be at the end of life. Add that to the fact they only really supported 1 team. The rest were privateers.
I would have been more surprised if they were to announce they were staying through the 2017 gen 2 chassis rules.
The best thing for the series to do is buy old NASCAR cars and some of those belt sets to put the steering wheel on the other side. Some stickers and it can be a Holden, Ford, Hyundai or anything else.

Max Rockatansky didn't drive a Holden.
Well, okay, there was the one. But that's it.
2016 is the last year of the V8. After that with the Gen 2 chassis, they can run motors other than V8 in the cars.
Yes, the world is coming to an end because FWD cars could never provide exciting racing while still being rooted in the reality of production cars.
Aussie V8 Fords have been running at Philip Island then Bathurst in Falcon sedans since 1960ish, it's not about FWD it's about over 50 years of Falcon sedans racing.
The end of a hugely successful era.
I haz so much sad
If the series allowed a RWD V8 powered Fusion or whatever it is sold as down under, that would be more worth it.
One thing to remember- the rules of selling cars in Austrailia have changed, it used to be that a certain percentage HAD be to built there, which is the reason why the Falcon exists in the first place. As far as I know, that rule changed, so nobody has to make really poor selling cars locally just to sell cars.
To compete with BMW's, we have Mustangs. At least that's the car everyone thinks is a good competitor to the BMW. I never thought it was, but hey....
Otherwise, the Lincoln line up needs a lot of help to actually compete. (not just with BMW, but anyone).
Nick- if Ford went away, I would be very very sad. And not the only on on this board who would be out of a job. Not sure why people wish others lose jobs....

Well at least you're honest.
I only started watching V8 Supercar races in 2013, but some of the problem seemed to be that the tracks I saw are too narrow for plenty of passing without crashes.
In reply to alfadriver: I thought that Mustangs were made to have a small(ish) RWD car? Only car enthusiasts cross shop Mustangs with 3-series.
