I'm looking for a GM site where you can enter a VIN and get scans of the component systems and be able to identify part numbers without asking for outside help. Does such a site exist? I've been spoiled by RealOEM for my BMW.

Try http://www.gmpartsdirect.com/ You have to search by year/make/model but it does have some diagrams and a ton of part numbers.
www.cultragfactoryparts.com has good pricing and is quite helpful if needed. gmpartsdirect usually has the best price but shipping is quite high and customer service is lacking. I got a part from Cultrag and while the part was a bit higher, the shipping was a whole lot cheaper, so I came out ahead.
compnine used to have exploded diagrams with part numbers going back to the early 80's. looked to be the very same pics that the parts guys at the dealerships pulled up on their computers... but they don't have those any more..
The best thing about being a BMW-head is RealOEM.
I spent an hour last night online finding two stock gaskets for a '91 Mustang.
RockAuto is always my plan B in these situations.
I've used a few different ones listed under the discount gm parts google. Big difference on yhem was typically shipping cost related but got some good savings. Rockauto often has nice oem goodies but it can be hit or miss. I have the best luck when using the part number for the search...

Thanks, Randy!
The LH seat-recline adjuster just broke on the truck less than an hour ago and I found a replacement on that site in a couple of minutes.
That link is a nice addition to the "favorites" list.
I used to use gm parts direct but they rarely have part numbers listed, they do have most diagrams though. Now I track the part number down and check ebay and amazon, amazon is usually barely more with cheaper shipping but I've had dealers on ebay that haven't beaten amazon a handful of times.
If you've got a good gm dealer locally, call them to check, twice they've been less than 10 dollars higher than amazon, gmpd, etc and they had it in stock.
I have had great luck by calling the local dealer, asking for their "online price". Usually very close to GMPD and free ship.
Another recent amount of savings I have gotten was by looking up parts on Rock Auto (to get the P/Ns) then popping the P/Ns into amazon and buying returned/open box items from Amazon Warehouse Deals. 2x new Timken front hub bearings for my F250 Superduty were $130/ea from Warehouse Deals (one had a damaged stud, took me 2 minutes to press out a stud from my old hub and press it into the new hub, other was perfect), radiator was $90 from Warehouse deals with a few bent fins, cant be seen when installed and saved me $100.
I've had really good luck with http://www.gmpartsgiant.com Their prices with shipping are typically the lowest I can find.

You're welcome Steve. I stumbled across them looking for an alternative to gm parts direct.
FooBag, Thanks for that link, another good choice.
