I "borrowed" and bastardized your GRM Challenge concept.
I work in a boring factory job fixing high speed packaging machines. We have a great crew on my shift so we have lots of idle time to bullE36 M3. About a week ago, we were talking about a hobby for one of my coworkers that is starting to enjoy downtime in his personal life. He says "I need to buy a challenge car." I said, "Why not try to do something local like an offroad challenge instead of having to build a car and take it all the way to Florida?" (we're in Indiana).
Just like that, the MLK Day Offroad Jamboree was born. $600 to build and run the best off-roading vehicle you can. Rules are under development and we're having our event this January. People have already bought platforms on which to build their budget offroader.
So, thanks GRM. Thanks for helping some bored factory technicians spend some quality fun time offroading in Indiana for almost no money. It's been fun to see how excited people get when talking about it and researching the possible vehicles. Can't wait to see how well or poorly it comes together.
AWESOME! now we need pictures and build threads and the course details.
Maybe GRM can cover it....
I am interested in this event. Sounds fun
Like rallycross, rally, pro truck, rock crawl, or some totally berkeleying kickass combination of the three?
Now the answer is Samurai!

Perhaps I should clarify: We'll welcome anyone that wants to fit their project within the rules (they're currently in development between episodes of dozing off at the computer). So, no, it's not just another offroad event. I can only imagine the liar's paradise I have on my hands but the general purpose for the $600 limit is to keep it cheap so we'll have lots of participants.
Is that what you meant iceracer?
I thought the answer was Volvo.

I sincerely hope the answer is 1990 K5 GMC Jimmy. 350ci, TBI, locking rear axle and, um, "lightened by nature."
$550. Paid the man, drove it home and directly into my woods. A very capable offroader in stock trim, actually.
I'll put up a build thread before we start hacking it to death.
I'll have to take my POS '01 Outback Wagon.
After I jack it up a bit

Ok. Rules have been finalized and can be viewed here.
Firstly, just want to make everyone aware that this event is in no way, shape or form sponsored or sanctioned by the Redbird State Recreation Area. We're gathering there as off-road enthusiasts to have a good time.
Secondly, the rules, although "finalized," are subject to some modification if any obvious errors or holes have been made. Of course, the final say on the rules is up to the panel of 3 guys that came up with this concept.
So, read, ask questions, email me, whatever you like. I'll happily do whatever I can to accomodate you and/or your questions.
Game on.... :)
Well, DAMN!! Can't find a place to host this PDF of the rules where everybody can get it. I'll keep working on it.....
If only I still had this:
RT4WD FTW.
Did someone say cheap off road racing?
Tough to find a K5 that nice in Chicago. Usually the front axle or transfer case is toast.

Going to start a build thread for this vehicle. Kind of off topic for this site, I know, but the grins/dollar ratio is great.

I did the same thing to, or with, an 86 Ramcharger a few years ago. Did surprisingly well and still had the Walmart rubber it had when I bought it. Not to be trifled with, surprised many onlookers who showed up with trailered, dedicated off roaders.
After its first and only serious off road adventure, I drove it 4 hours home and it pretty much fell apart. Literally.

Hm. I have an XJ that fits this bill. It was....free? In trade for a Taurus that actually made me money for its purchase.
In reply to mndsm:
that sounds like you can do that but in the rules it says you have to take a 300 credit towards your build
