BIL is looking at a 2019 or 2020 Sonata with the 1.6T G4FJ (I think). I am not sure if Hyundai has figured out the "coking the back of the valve GDI" issues yet, especially with the turbo, or if there is another great fuel economy - cheap buy-in I can suggest for him.
What say the hive?
i've not heard anything about them. We put 70k on a GDI Nu (2.0) with zero issues. I'd recommend a seafoam every 30k on ANY GDI engine.
I've not heard of any issues with either the Hyundai or Honda direct injection setups. Seafoam is a good idea, but I wouldn't be too worried anyway.
In reply to barefootskater (Shaun) :
The honda's don't coke up, they just fill the sump with raw fuel.

Honda DI has been having issues with dribbling injectors, in the V6s. Causes rich-mixture codes and misfires. Allegedly it is due to insufficiently clean assembly practices when the injectors were made, although that doesn't explain to me why it occurs after a few dozen thousand miles and not right away.

Right, the most important question is IF this engine even has a valve deposit problem. Not all of them do. Just wanted to quote bob's post since he's got time on the engine.
In reply to bobzilla :
I never said they were without issue, just not that particular issue.

Thank you for distilling this to the point, but I don't think that's the same engine.
In reply to tuna55 :
Hyundai hasn't had the same issues some of the other manufacturers have had. That's not to say there isn't ANY issues, but they arent as wide spread as others. A safe bet is to make sure you clean them to ensure you don't have a problem.
Bump.
Bob, do you recommend seafoam in the gas tank, or straight to the vacuum lines?
In reply to mtn (Forum Supporter) :
I do vacuum line for half a can and pour the rest in the tank.
EDIT: the reason is the issue you're trying to "fix" is carbon/oil buildup on the valves because fuel no longer flows over them like port injection. Putting it in the fuel tank doesn't help that because..... fuel no longer flows over the valves like port injection.

Read about the Hyundai Theta II engine issues. It sounds like a bunch of them seized due to bits which got into the engine during manufacturing. There were law suits, recalls involving millions of vehicles, extended warranties, etc. Google, but my recollection is that the issue is improved in the newer ones.

There have also been issues with the 1.5L engine where there can be a quart of gas in the sump. It sounds like the issue was most prevalent in cold climates. Honda made a tune change, there was a law suit, warranties have been extended, etc.
In reply to Snrub :
While at the UOA place I had several customers that were seeing 2+ quarts of raw fuel in their 1.5T

Well he bought a Mazda 6 anyway, so I consider that an upgrade.
Thanks, everyone!
