BTW, the Chrysler FWD 2.2/2.5 and Neon transmissions use the same splines on the inner CV joints as used on the Fiat. So you'd just need to put the appropriate Chrysler CV inner CV joints on your Fiat axles and the rest is just engine swap stuff.

I gave up on my swap, but from what I remember the issues I saw were the water pump hitting the frame (section it or use an electric pump)

The driver's frame rail would need to be moved upwards to allow the transmission to sit high enough.

To use the better intake, you'd need to cut out the rear rail (and replace it with a new piece of steel) If you use a DOHC head or a old style intake it should fit under the stock rear rail.

A pull-type clutch slave cylinder will take care of the clutch.

Looks like a fun project! Good luck with it, whatever you end up doing. Head to Xweb and get to know the folks there. Collectively, they've forgotten more about Exxies than almost anyone.

I'm working on one, too. Going to pick it up next week.

What did you get?

And more importantly can you insert 'free' somewhere in the name like my FreE30 and Dan's FreeAT

That really doesn't flow very well.

hmmm.... a gutted daily driver with a tightly installed cage. swaped engine of some sort * ioncare what something though* and glass looks good, maybe replce all wiring an have fun.

a nice 180-225 hp should still allow for a 30mpg sipper. Then drive it to some HPDE's just have it as aeveryday beater.

Maybe with a non Fiat engine it will stay running and not lose every bit of oil in the engine??? :P

Haha, Awesome! What about 900 SfreeG? Start you're own thread when you get it! I don't want to do any more hijacking.

x1/9s look like fun. I dont think I could fit in one though, at least without a different seat and steering wheel. Id vote against an engine swap or cutting the windshield off, but other than that there is no reason not to modify it.

I've heard mixed stories on whether the 40/80 cams do anything for the FI Engines. I've had a few X1/9's that were all in better shape than this one, but for free who can complain. First objective to see if it runs, its been sitting for a while so I'll drop some oil down the cylinders and see what that does and if it turns over. For sure the brake and clutch hydraulics will need attention but I've been there and its not real expensive to replace with new parts. As for the bodywork that'll be a fun project as I'm about to graduate from a technical school with an auto collision and refinishing certificate so the rust will be the last thing that concerns me. I'll have it here at the house on Sunday or Monday (waiting to use the father in laws truck and trailer.) All in all from what i can tell i'm gonna need to replace the doors and the rear rocker panels behind the rear wheels. I'll post more pics and what i find about it when i get it home monday. Wish me luck!

I'm 6 foot/215 and fit okay. The secret: bend down the seat track rear stops and you get roughly 1 1/2" extra legroom.

Nothing wrong with fiat engines that cannot be cured with proper electical work (read grounds) and timing belts cannot cure. I have seen BADLY beaten fiat 128 and 132 engines that will continue to run long last their sale by date

Thinkkker Take a look at the event results from an autox I attended last weekend and than you try and tell me I need a none Fiat engine. By the way my car’s engine and driveline is stock other than a header.

http://www.windycitymiataclub.com/autox/remember_when/2009/event_01-5_09_09/event_01-5_09_09-class.html look for the only X1/9

dansxr2 A 40/80 cam will be a waste of your hard earned cash on a stock FI X1/9.as you can see from my last autox there is a lot you can do to X1/9’s before you even touch the engine.

alright so upon further inspection the car does indeed have terminal rust issues. I plan to try to get it running and then look into the trans hydraulics and see if i can find another body thats in better shape to swap en this engine/trans if they are okay. If anyone needs trim or odds and ends parts parts let me know, parts will be VERY reasonable!!!
