some of you may think this is gonna sound like a silly inquiry, but really im not some idiot. i wanna know how hard it would be to put an lsx in an astro van. theres a possibility that ill be getting one and i wanted to take it up because of shaggin wagon possibilities, but when i learned that the vortec is essentially 75% of an ls... well im sure you can see where im going with this
its a tight swap I am sure but I dont seen why it wouldnt work. I have seen plenty of astro/350 swaps. you may want to lurk around astrosafari.com and see what info you can find.
I don't know about the LS specifically, but Astro vans love SBC V8 swaps. Supposed to be stupid easy.
It isn't that bad at all. A quick google search will show you a few examples and a few kits for mounts. I don't think you really even need the kit. I do know that one of the guys who built one tried using the 4l80e to replace the weaker 4l60e that comes in the Astro but claimed it wouldn't fit. Personally I would find a way to make it fit. That thing would be a beastly workhorse with a 300hp vortec and a stout transmission.
The Astro came with the 4.3L and they also came AWD. Sooooo... LSX powered AWD Astro is chock fulla win in my book!!
I've seen an ls1 in a vw bug. ( yes, I know you said lsx.) Grass roots= expert at shoving big things in small spaces. Never say never. But really, you are 12, aren't you?
If having thoughts of throwing lsx's in everything makes you 12, then I want to be 12 too.
I think he's 13 since the primary concern is the shaggin' wagon capabilities and the increased chances of a getaway from angry fathers with an lsx vs. the 4.3.
i havent been 12 for 7 years fyi lol. i only made that comment because i didnt want people comparing me to that one idiot talking about putting a viper v10 in the back of an odyssey. anywayz, i remember pulling the heads off a safari and so ya i could see how it would be tight to put two extra pistons in. the existence of kits sounds AWESOME

I missed that. But would love to see someone try!

I've read that swapping gen III and gen IV chevy V8's isn't too bad on a RWD Astro, but fairly involved on the AWD versions. However, I don't see why you'd want to spend the extra cash on an aluminum LS engine. Just find an old iron-block 5.3L or 6.0L for super-cheap.
Who needs a kit? Go by Harbor Freight, pick up a cheap flux welder and have some fun!
I've worked on a couple really fast Astros. Definitely get a lot of info before you go out on the road with a built Astro. You'll need stiffer shocks and more in the rear or the suspension is going bind and cause a roll-over when you try to put that power down.
If you want to keep the AWD you will have to do a lot of drivetrain upgrades which are even more expensive than a big engine.

I was secretly hoping patgizz would put his 5.3 into one of the Astros instead of an Impala
From what little I read, it's a tight fit but doable. Some have had to lift the body up a couple of inches, but that may have been the AWD versions.

A quick check on google says the Astro has 170.4 cubic feet of cargo room, the LSX should fit in the back no problem.
What kinda car are you gonna swap the LSX into after you bring it home in your Astro?
