My wife went on a delivery mission yesterday to release a bunch of turtles who'd finished their rehab regiment.

Unfortunately there were two who didn't have any location information when they were delivered to the rescue. So I'll be spending some time this weekend getting our outdoor enclosure for Nora & Mr. O setup permanent habitation for these two.

For anyone who isn't on FB, Nora is a box turtle who was turned into the rescue a couple years ago due to some injuries she'd previously suffered, probably from a dog attack. She's missing her left eye & has a misaligned jaw. Here jaw isn't able to open fully, plus its misalignment causes her beak to over-grow, requiring periodic trimming. When we adopted her 2 years ago the plan was to have her live in an outdoor enclosure full-time. However, she's been in captivity for several months by that point & had decided she likes being an indoor turtle much better. She quickly became the queen of our home with her personality & crazy antics.

Mr. O is a juvenile sulcata tortoise who was found roaming the streets of Biloxi a couple years ago, but was never claimed. He just came to us late last year, but he quickly made himself at home. Eventually he'll grow too big to live indoors, but we can't leave him alone in the outside enclosure yet because he wants to eat everything white in color - rocks, shells, Spanish Moss, glass...

I've moved a soft shell snapper safely. Very intimidating animal when you know how far they can extend their necks.

I didn't want to pick it up at all, but he was heading down the middle of the street towards the busy road in front of the development. I grabbed the back of the shell just next to the back legs.

Here in Florida, the usual chelonian to see trying to cross a road is the gopher tortoise. I've moved a bunch. They're a pretty cool animal that lives in burrows that provide habitat for a bunch of other species.

They're now officially a threatened species due to our determination to pave or develop the entire state.

From 2007-08 I was drafting at a marine and environmental consulting firm in SW FL, and a fair percent of the business was doing environmental surveys for development. I drew a lot of EIS plans of gopher tortoise burrows. They seemed fairly widespread in the immediate area, happily, and I liked that we were helping to catalogue them.

Pete, was Nora the queen of the roost when I visited y'all last year?
