Depending on what state you live in, when your son starts driving all of your rates will go up for all of your cars.  Unless you are in a lucky state where you can designate which car he is driving and keep it seperate.  We had to switch from Allstate to Safeco for just that reason, our policy went up nearly $2k a year.

To expand upon that, I have to have two different policies for my cars in California and my cars in Florida. Which in my mind makes absolutely no sense other than the insurance company find ways to capitalize via self-written policy.
