Semi-local Subaru dealer has a white Premium (includes the heated seats) w/ CVT and no other options, which is about exactly what I'm interested in, for $23.7 online.  I have a $500 Subaru Ambassador coupon from a friend.

I'm wondering is it worth it to go tomorrow evening and try to get a deal "by the end of the month"?  Is that still a thing for salesmen?

It’s still a possibility if they are close to reaching some sales goal, but there probably isn’t a way for you to know that easily.  Worst case, go in there, test drive it, then lowball them.

Edit:  regarding the lowballing, I’d check Truecar to see what the bottom price has been recently on a Crosstrek  equipped like what you want, and check the Subaru forums for any price check threads.  They gave me an idea what deals people were (or weren’t) getting when I was WRX shopping.

Yea Crosstreks will sell for no lower than invoice -$500 iirc. They are just too popular.

Has the Subaru CVT really improved that much in the last 3-5 years? I think this is the first time here or anywhere I've heard anyone say anything good about them.

Or did they borrow someone elses for the Crosstreks?

No the Subaru CVT is still a lump of trash. Less than 1000 miles on ours and it lurches hard going from Reverse to Drive. The dealer said "This is normal for CVTs you just need to get used to it." Wife is on her 3rd Subaru with a CVT, the other two didn't do that. "Yea so you'll just have to get used to it if you've never driven a CVT."

With that being said we've never had to have anything replaced transmission wise it's just not an exciting transmission to drive with. Great for people who don't care about driving dynamics and just need an appliance.

Someone said the CVT has a torque converter that locks up as soon as you get moving and doesn't unlock until you come to a stop.

 Doesn't sound right.

I have no idea, but it makes some sense to me. The CVT just needs some means of covering the gap from neutral to the lowest functional ratio on the CVT. As soon as you're moving enough for that lowest ratio, there's no need for any slippage.

Its at the bottom of the page. This isn’t where I found it before but this seems more reliable. A locked up torque converter is part of the reason the crosstrek can achieve the MPG it does.

Had two generations of Honda Fit that did this same thing. Totally fine. It is the way the transmission behaves.

Someone recommended going through my USAA car buying app, they sent me a price that's down to $23251 now.  That's down from the $23.7k online "internet price".

I'm going to test drive it after work tonight, and I'm taking the 50 gal Husky costume tote bin just to make sure it fits.  I already know the dog will fit.
