Don't believe I have seen this one before. Do I want to? Anyone giving it two thumbs up?
Saw this one years ago. It's car stuff, of course it's cool. Dennis Hopper character is entertaining.

I had to watch to the credits to figure out Harry Hamlin. That scene kinda reminds me of the California Kid...Right?? Hot rod, canyon, mean cop?
Thats pretty bad...
Is this the one with the guys working at the Porsche shop racing in the canyons by LA? If so, saw it years ago, but not recently enough to remember much else.
Yep. Harry Hamlin would obviously be in a Porsche and Dennis Hopper (crazed, as usual) in the 'Vette. Could have predicted that ending from a mile away... :)
King of the Mountain you say?
A true classic that I have not watched in 20yrs? 30yrs? I just remember the old school stopwatches tapes in the car and crazy ass Hooper.
Saw it when it came out at the drive-in and remembered thinking (even as a teenager) that I'd just seen the worst movie Ever. Still do.
I think that movie was the first time I thought "how can they do nothing but drink all day and never eat?"
Oh yeah, also remember that the engine sounds often didn't match throttle position.
Yeah, Bad.
What fantastic driving! Looks like the inspiration for the FF series which then added the "modern adaptation" of downshifting every 10 seconds to go faster...
But the sound of the Vette engine in the beginning scene is very nice.
Well we know what Dennis Hoppers character from Apocalypse Now did after he returned from Cam... er Vietnam... This race does not exist nor will it ever exist.
Half the fun is how bad some of these old movies are.

I remember seeing one commercial for it when it was new and then never seeing anything about it until the internet came along. Yeah, it's definitely a bad movie, but so typical of movies from that era. I swear movie producers were so high back then they would approve almost anything if it sounded kinda cool, no matter how bad the production would turn out to be. They took a lot of more risks back then.
That said, the creators of Initial D probably saw this movie...
It sort of doesn't matter how bad (or good, though it is better of its good...) it is, it's a gratuitous car movie. The FF series is pretty universally horrible, but there are (some) cool cars and stunt driving.
Every now and again, we get a gem like Baby Driver.
As long as they keep making them!
It's good to know we have a long history of car movies, just wish there were more of them (seriously, we get loads of other crap year in and year out).
I've blocked that movie from my memory mostly but I dig the truck hopper is driving with the spotlight
Watched it last night. Yeah, it's bad, but the cars were cool. It's also strangely reassuring to see that Dennis Hopper was as nuts in 1981 as he was in any other year.
