Hi All
I've been poking around for a small, inexpensive truck, and ran across a 1998 Isuzu Hombre, 2.2-liter, 4 cylinder, 5-speed, 2WD truck. 129,000 miles.
Looks to be--in pics--in good condition, and fits the bill for mileage and mpg--in the high 20s--and the ability haul a light load.
I know they shared some componentry with Chevy. Does anyone have any first hand experience with these they can share before I go see it wednesday night? Any insights would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Same truck as the S10 in almost every way. That said, my 2.2L 5-speed is dog slow, and barely gets 23mpg, can't imagine the auto would do better on either front.
Yup, rebadged S10. With all the same bad/good.
Find a toyota pickup with 22re engine and be done with it. Around the bay area you can find a decent one for 1500-2000$. They are a dying breed though as smog puts them into the junkyard. I'm thinking a clean stock toyota short bed with 22re will be a classic truck some day as they will have all been beaten into the earth.
nothing really bad about them except they are definitely slow. my dad has a 98 s10 2.2 auto. it is a capable little truck, gets good mpg, but put your foot down and play the waiting game. like dangerous pulling out in traffic slow.
If your choice was the S-10 / Hombre with a 4 cylinder and automatic or a Ford / Mazda with the 4 cylinder and auto...go with the Ford. It's much more reliable.
If it was ANY 4 cylinder small truck with auto, I'd go with the Nissan. I've never owned one but the dealer/part situation for Nissan in my experience working on friend's Nissans (and my 280Z) was/is very good. Maybe it is for Toyota, too, but the Toyota dealers themselves are insufferable.
DO NOT BUY A 4 CYL FORD WITH A SLUSHBOX!!! ford put the a4ld into rangers and such, and speaking as someone who had the pleasure of rebuilding one, i would rather feed my testicles to piranhas with them still attatched to my body. unless its newer or manual, run
Decent truck. My mom has one (Chevrolet badged, '00 model). I've borrowed it on a number of occasions when I needed to haul more than would fit in my car.
I'll echo the comments about it being slow. Still, it'll drag a 6x12 utility trailer full of furniture down the interstate just fine.
