I've got both.
The boxer is really wide to fit in the chassis (like 12" too wide), and the 2WD tranny is made of glass.
I still might go Subie, but I'd have to mod the chassis a lot and would probably use a stronger AWD tranny with the rear output welded up.
The Impreza trans being glass, is that under "normal operation"? As in if they are glass with a modded big HP engine in a factory weight car then how will it handle a stock HP WRX engine in a 1800lb chassis?

I haven't ruled it out. Still gotta deal with the motor width issue.

ford 302 + audi 90* transaxle can take 380hp i hear.. which is plenty for that little car and can be done on the cheap.
Apex, he's already got a 224hp (stock, plenty more with more boost) 4-cylinder motor that weighs less than a typical 302 and either way he'll need to make an adapter, so I think that is the best solution atm.
Passat/Audi transaxle seems best with the engine at hand.
with the dodge 2.2 he's using? or WRX motor?
