I'm prepping my 96 Miata for winter action and checking to see if there are any points I should pay particular attention to with undercoating and rust-proofing. The car is nearly spotless right now so I'd like to preserve that.

Yes I'll be replacing my stock mudflaps with something more commonly seen on Subarus in addition to a rally bar on the front with some extra lights.

Rallyata!

Make sure the drains in the pinch weld in front of the rear wheel are clear, that is the most common place for the rust to start.

Inside the rockers, bottom of fenders, along the rear wheel well openings, bottom edge of trunk lid, a pillars. Those are the places one of mine has rusted. I'd also spray a bunch down the drain holes for the soft top.

In reply to BARNCA:

You're in Concord?! I'm up there all the time for SCCNH meetings and racing at NHMS. We got canceled this weekend due to snow... Lame.

I'll never turn down free bedliner.

My '99's sills are rusting pretty badly now.

Should I drill a hole in the rockers and fog in with some thinned POR or something?

Take the sill plates off in the door jamb. There should be several holes where you can spray a rust inhibitor down into the rockers using a flashlight as well to help out. Just did this to my '91. Pull the bottoms of the front fenders away and clean them out and coat them with rust paint or spray. Open up the rocker drains with a small flat blade screwdriver and then coat that area in case you scrape off the paint and expose the metal. I've given kleen flo's honey goo a try this year.
