There are not many around here for sale and it seems that those that are, are all T-tops. Was that the only configuration that you could get in the US or was it just vastly more popular than the tintop/moon roof variety?

You could get hard tops and sun roof cars. T Tops do seem to be more common. I autocross an E Stock '91 MR2. Love it, but it does have T Tops. They say "the car to have" is the '93 hard top. Hard to come by, but it is lighter and more rigid. The 15" wheels give you better tire options in stock classes and the rear suspension was revised in '93. Some say it's better. But for local competition, my '91 T Top car on Tokicos and Kumhos with A/C and stock exhaust is doing fine. It's my daily driver as well.

Take care,

Ed

One of my all-time favorites as far as design is concerned. I've been looking for a clean non-turbo without ridiculous miles for a while. They don't seem to exist in the northeast for a reasonable price. T-tops far outsold tin tops. After early 1993, turbos were only t-tops.

The vast majority of SW20's sold here had T-tops.

What makes it worse is a lot of the hardtops were sold as base models with automatics

There were only 20 hardtop turbo MR2s sold here in 1993.

I'm looking for a nice hardtop or sunroof too, but I want a turbo. They aren't easy to find, but Toyota sold the most of the SW20 here in 1991. They rapidly tapered off after that.

The 93+ cars had some nice upgrades but all that stuff will bolt on.

It should be mentioned- I have some friends who are pretty smart about this stuff (smarter than me anyhow) who think the '91 '92 suspension is actually superior. In E Stock, the 15" wheels are a huge factor for the '93. I don't know if they're right, but I do know Toyota say they changed the suspension to cure the "snap oversteer" criticism. With a big front sway bar I have trouble getting my '91 to rotate. Yes, on a stock front bar they can get backward in a hurry, but it's easily cureable.

My Uncle-in-Law has a solid roof non-turbo 5 speed MK2 in East Texas. I don't remember the year.

My main concern with a Mk2 T-top would be using it for HPDE and stuffing it into a wall or similar, that might not end too well if I sit in a mountain of glass shards.

OTOH it would make the DD aspect of the car nicer, as long as the T-Tops keep the weather out in winter...

Dr. Hess, your U-i-L's car isn't for sale, is it?
