Subaru announced today that it plans to unveil the “sharper and more enthusiast-focused 2024 WRX TR” at the upcoming Subiefest Florida–slated for October 7 at Daytona International Speedway–with the help of Subaru drivers Travis Pastrana and Bucky Lasek.

GRM will also be in…

The WRX STi we test drove last year was a bunch of fun, IMO, despite the lack of speed on track. If Subaru's "enthusiast-focused" treatment includes enhancements to make it faster, it could be a winner.

I see this as an absolute win regardless of whether we get more power or just a retweaking of the suspension and a cool wing.

May not be the sti we all wanted, but will definetly be the fastest 2024 wrx. I wonder what the price will be.

They should have had this in Maryland as both Pastrana and Lasek are from the Old Line state.

That being said, I always felt that TR Subarus were more stripped down with fewer features that in turn made them more driver focused and also left items that often get aftermarket upgrades primed to be swapped out. Sorta like the MR Evo's.

The new WRX and Civic Si are the only two candidates for a newer car that I would like to buy and this is a bit intriguing. I'd love for a cheaper, even more stripped down version of the base model. I wouldn't even mind if it just had basic upgrades, but call me crazy, but I'd be bummed out if this enthusiast version had eyesight on the manuals. That's an automatic (no pun intended) no go for me.

The GR Corolla right now is the only car I'd trade the turbo BRZ for, but I guess I could be interested here.

I suspect it will the be the wheels/brakes/light aero treatment.

I had my heart set on buying a next-gen WRX STi until it was canceled.

I'll laugh if it's $4500 more for color matching wheel arch trim.

Just picked up a base model, I'd be happy if Subaru offered the brembos as an accessory.  Order some color matched cladding next and I'll send it :)

I just assumed that it would come with blown head gaskets stock :-/

I hear that's an EJ thing. Apparently the FA motor doesn't do that anymore.

Still breaking it in at about 750 miles on it so far so been tough keeping the rpm’s below 4K.  Quick off the line and power comes on evenly, but the gearing is really short so that 4K comes up quick.  Steering is also quick but lacks any feel.  No weird squeaks or rattles either, unlike some of the other recent Subaru’s I had recently.

Since it’s the base model there’s no fancy camera eyesite thingy or starlink monitoring, even comes with a physical key and ignition.  Seats are decent, good bolstering and seems easy to clean, but firm enough for me to not be comfortable for more than 1.5 hours or so at a time.  Getting about 23 mpg mixed use so far so not that great.  Also has the “split screen” tablet with some physical buttons.  Most of the infotainment on the top screen and HVAC on the bottom.

Overall I would rate it decent/competent.  Honestly it feels like a throwback car, brand new 10 year old car if you will.  Maybe it feels that way because it’s the Base without all the modern features, but there’s no way I would spend 10k plus or more for the Limited version.  Base or this TR version may be the way to go so folks can just mod as they see fit.

The 17” wheels look OK with the black cladding and wheel gap, but if I go body color cladding and no drop the wheels might look too small.  Think I might go with an 18” wheel and body color cladding though.  Next to my GLI the WRX wheels do look small (I should prob lower the GLI too lol).

Yup, sounds like my kind of car and trim level. Old car you can buy new. How's the rev hang? I hear they greatly reduced/removed that in these cars (compared to the VA WRX). Also, have you considered the Perrin Steering Dampener lockdown? I hear it helps with the steering feel.

Not noticing any rev hang at all.

Thank you for the suggestion on the steering dampener lockdown, will order shortly.

I had a 2015 WRX and swapped the lower steering shaft to an STI piece, which had no damper, which did help steering feel quite a bit. I also added the shift stop to prevent some of the side to side slop common on those and added a more solid shifter cable bushing, which also made it feel quite a bit nicer.

Is this viable for the VB WRX? Not sure how they match up since its a new car.

I can attest to the STI steering shaft being a nice upgrade in even older WRXs.  Heck it made a huge difference in my old 96 Camaro SS (98 rack and solid shaft) too.  A solid steering shaft can make a huge difference.

Thanks to this thread, I just went and test drove a WRX Premium 6 speed that was near me. I gotta say, I don't understand how all of the reviewers can complain the car is loud and NVH is bad. To me, this thing feels like a luxury car (note: I drive 1 of 2 Miatas on a daily basis). Car feels well put together and refined with a simple interior, acceleration is nice (and the gears are definitely short) but the thing is, the steering does feel a little dead and shifting from 1-2 felt a little interesting. Not as smooth as I would have liked.

I kind of understand this. I have no intention of tracking my car, but a big AP Sprint kit would look great behind the wheels on the BRZ.

Well my local Subie dealer has a base in white and a WRB base in transit.  This might be the answer to my DD / stock class rallycross desires.

That could be the ticket. They have an available aluminum skidplate (?) add-on and supposedly this new global platform increased the suspension stroke.
