I'm admittedly biased, as the 944 is one of my all-time favorite cars, but this seems a bit unfair to me. Yes, it's slow (though an S shouldn't be THAT slow), but for it's time, it wasn't that bad. And he mentions nothing about the positive aspects like the weight distribution or suspension design. Also, I don't know that he could have found a worse example. Mustard yellowish gold with a brown interior and hideous giant aftermarket wheels that can't be helping the acceleration or handling....

Say it ain't so! My front-engine Porsches were easily the best handling cars I've owned. I guess that makes me a little biased, too. But everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

I like 944s. I owned one. Other than the hyperbole, he's got some valid points. I've driven a 944 Turbo, which was better, but was still slower and felt heavier than an MR2 Turbo. If you're not a Porsche fanatic, you can see where he's coming from. You have to appreciate the marque and the quality (albeit with some flaws,) in the finest German tradition to 'get it.'

The 86+ had the nicest dash and gauge combo of the 80's.

I hope that whomever volunteered their car was in on the tone of the review ahead of time. With Porsches, the more hideous the color combo, the more valuable. And most of them can pull it off, but this car desperately wants it's original wheels back.

In reply to Tyler H:

I actually prefer the older style dash and gauges, like my 924 has. To each their own though.

I enjoyed this purely because it made my Porsche loving roommate super mad. I do like the 944 and want one someday

46 seconds in, and I know this is a very stupid review. No need to waste any more time.

What is the point of that kind of review? Geez.

It's Mr. R's schitck. But must of his "reviews" are a lot more interesting and entertaining than this one. He and his co-writer both have masters' degrees in English literature or something, so they mix a lot of highbrow references in with TONS of dick jokes. Mostly, he tries to describe a car's place in the larger culture. But this one is just... raw hatred. Not usually like him, IMO.

I'll agree here. Normally his insults are completely over the top and funny. His critique of the 944 just seemed lazy and not particularly creative. It seems like the problem was that the car was neither good nor bad. It was too unexceptional, which bothered him.

That said, a 944 is a car that looks more impressive than it performs. It only really shines when you get it out onto a track at 10/10. At which point, the handling and engineering make sense. Arguably the best handling chassis Porsche ever produced. On track, it fits a nice little nook between the Miata (lowest power, best handling of the three) and the E30 (best power, weakest handling). On a street though... it really isn't going to do anything better than either of those other two cars. It is just not as fun as a Miata, nor does it have the practicality of an E30.

Those massive wheels gave it super-tall gearing and probably weren't good for handling either...look at the ride height.

massive wheels, shit gearing, and never drove it even remotely close to the limit, where it shines.

His opinion is worthless.

The vitriol he spews towards this car is because nobody loves him, yet many love the 944. He is alone in this world.

Full disclaimer - I own a 944S and it is slow as all hell.

Ha - I only very sporadically enjoy his "reviews." They're not really reviews either, so, grain of salt and all.

Especially when you're driving old cars ("regular" cars) you're really testing how well it's been maintained and what questionable modifications have been done in it's history.

Yeah, these are more for entertainment than actual information, although in some reviews he impresses me with how much he has done his research.

It took me a long time to warm up to Mr. Regular's style, but his constant, wildly esoteric literary references finally pulled me in. I rarely agree with his thoughts on the cars themselves, but he generally does a good job capturing the zeitgeist surrounding them.

This review really doesn't have any of that.

If it makes you porch-aaaahhh folks feel any better it's not the first time he had reviews like this, RX8 was not a bit more of a rip as well.

Still love the general way he conducts his reviews, not all people have to take the John Davis way of reviews.

Don't the Porsche fan-bois generally dislike the 924/944 anyhow, since it has the engine "at the wrong end"?

I watch a lot of his stuff just for the off the wall references. Sometimes one hits me just right and it's laugh out loud funny. I didn't really like the tone of this one either -- it wasn't entertaining. His whole schtick is a critique of a car's mythos. Check out the AW11 MR2 video for an easier watch.

We all have cars we really dont like and it just comes off like this is one of his. Im pretty open minded about cars but even i have my 944.
