...and he think's I'm the cool car uncle-- he was pretty proud and sent me a picture and told me he was planning on signing papers on Monday.

It's a 2013, so subject to the valve spring recall, and pretty low miles (<20K) which seems like it at least has the potential to have not all that many miles on the recall work, if the recall work has been done.

Anybody within earshot have best source for the story on this, or have experience that he might still be able to learn from?

Run the vin at http://www.safercar.gov and if the recall shows up, it hasn't been done.

It seems 2013 even if the recall has been done should have a built in discount. Looks like every 2013 for sale has engine problems. There were a bunch with bad motors on auto tempest a few weeks ago.

See my word in this thread about how to download the full dealer service history.

Thanks for that-- looks like the valve spring recall was the last service the dealer performed, done 6/2019 with only about 2k miles put on the car since then.

Low mileage since that work isn't super comforting.

From what I've read a lot of people's motors exploded within a few hundred miles, so the fact that it made it to 2k is probably a good sign.

Unless he's going for cheap cheap like I did with my BRZ, I would think he should be able to find a newer car with more miles for the same money.

Tell him offer half & start rounding up parts for a K24 swap for when the oiling issue & the pilot bearing issue hits.
To me anything with a Subaru motor is not for kids wanting a first car.
At least are awesome chassis & prime candidates for a K24. K24 turbo even better.

So, this is an 8 year old car that has 19k miles on the odometer.  That averages to 2,375 miles of driving per year.

If you are buying from the original owner, it seems the owner is continuing to drive the car at the same pace.

That's not an emissions legal swap, though, because of the electronics issues.

Non emissions legal swaps are a great way to total a car.

102,000 miles on my FR-S.  Still waiting for any issues besides being a blast to drive.

In reply to parker :

That's good, I'm just not a Subaru fan after first hand seeing them be big money pits even for big Subaru fans who tried everything to keep them alive.
Hopefully lasts as long as the TSX I just got - 231k.

How many of those big money pits were stock?

In reply to parker :

2 were. A Baja turbo on it's 2nd engine needing a 3rd & a wrx. Besides those, our renters had 7 Subarus between the 2 brothers & seldom had more than 2 running at any given time.

Two running out of seven sounds like a regular GRM ratio...

They were Subaru fanatics. I would DD my MR2 Turbo with a 4th gen Caldina swap while they tried to get their Subarus running. The oldest brother rebuilt his STI motor & was ASE certified. It lasted about 6 months.  The other brother worked at a wrecking yard & was always bringing home Subaru parts. They would admit they were a challenge but liked the awd.
Our daughter finally sold her Baja turbo & that's the last Subaru I want to ever be involved with. We had a non turbo '01 Forester & the dealer replaced the hg's because they were covered under the 100k hg extended warranty.  Bought it cheap with 99k on it because I knew the hg's were leaking & they hadn't been done. That was a good car but only had it for @2 years because a deer totaled. it.
