I'm 38 and can barely hear the people across from me at a table in a restaurant, it's very frustrating. I went to a hearing aid store and they told me I had great hearing, so I'm not sure what to do. More than a decade of loud wedding receptions and playing in a band in college did my ears in I think.

I'm very surprised to have something to say on this thread, but a dear friend of mine who passed away recently at age 92 was very pleased to finally have a good set after a decade of trial and error. He'd gone through a lot of them and his wife had gone through a lot in trying to communicate with him over the years, which in my opinion was the saddest part. That, and the isolation. From an email to another friend:
Hey I’m glad you emailed – I talked to Glenn yesterday and he is very happy with his new hearing aids. He’s gone through a few varieties, some expensive and some cheap. The ones he bought are from Hear USA, they are Siemens brand, model Motion SX. He said they were about 2-3 thousand
