I liked the ZR1 vs. Ferrari episode!
It wasn't the be-all end-all of comparos, but it was fun and funny! it's the only piece of schtick that I didn't barf everytime the Adam feller was talking or in the shots.

Wow! ...and I thought that I was harsh...I think the UK show has lost some of its luster over the years, but it still entertains me more than the reality/contest/game show rubbish that clutters the airwaves. Give me more of those fake-but-funny and scripted car shows
The big thing they need to correct (for me) is the commentary on the laps, stig or star. It is boring and they don't sound interesting. Everything else on the show is decent, or will become decent with time.

I thought TGUK could do nothing wrong...

...then you haven't been paying attention. Clarkson, in particular, is always in trouble for saying non-PC stuff. Kinda the Prince Phillip of the BBC.
I was being sarcastic. TGUK can do nothing wrong according to this forum. Same d-baggery, same obviously scripted skits, same manufactured drama.
But I am entertained by it on both shows because I am aware of what it is and watch it based on face value. Cuz ya know, it is TV

Lighten up Francis

Maybe because TGUK is the original. They invented the cool wall, the challenges, the artsy video clips of the cars, dropping pianos on Morris Marinas, etc. The US and Aussies are knockoffs.
In reply to YaNi:
I don't think you can call it a knock-off if it is created and produced by the same people. After all they call it Top Gear, not because it's a similiar formula, because it is the same thing...for a reason.
The Car Show is a knock-off.
And I guess Top gear is a knock-off of Fifth Gear?
Seriously, lighten up Francis...
Yes, I don't care for much of what the UK version does either. My reason for posting this was seeing a driving practice portrayed (yes in a safe manner, but this was not shown on the screen) that if it was done in real life would make many people on this forum and elsewhere very angry. The destruction of nice cars gets old as well. I know all the arguements about its their money, they can do what they want, and to a certain point yes, but I think they go a bit too far. For one thing, I know at least some of the cars (the alfas for example) are "borrowed" from the owners with the impression that they are going to get them back after the show. Also, watching something that pretty much says "you couldnt afford this, but to me it is as worthless as used kleenex", and "any car more than 5 years old and under $50k should be destroyed" doesnt give me the feeling of wanting to watch the show. If that caddy was really a diesel, it was likely worth as much as the purchase price of all the cars i have owned combined (not to mention very rare, try to find one that nice for sale), so yes seeing someone total it annoys me.
You must hate auto racing in general, because it is just an organized destruction of perfectly good vehicles. Hacked up, stripped, and routinely crashed for our entertainment.
Yes, I dislike demolition derby, tough truck, chumpcar, 24 hours of lemons, and that type of racing, but other than that I don't see it as the same thing. For example even if they get wrecked sometimes, I dont think an improved toruring car is built with the intention of destroying a nice example of whatever car it is just because its not new and shiny.

Chicken and the egg scenario.
But in the meantime, i'll sit back and watch the argument about a TV SHOW that you have the option of watching if you like it, and not watching if you don't, and guffawing everytime someone says someone else is wrong for liking UK but not US. You can't buy this kind of entertainment.

Wow, I have to lighten up because I don't like a show on tv? When did it become your policy to not allow opinions? Everybody's got one you know.
BTW, I played the lighten up Francis line just a few days ago, but it was in response to a personal attack that seemed out of line....you know, it seemed to fit the situation.
Rarely is there a TV show I like. Even rarer (more rare?) is the TV show the wife and I like together. Top Gear is that show. We watched two episodes of TG USA (the first two, I think) and will probably watch more. I liked Carolla's show- it was like a sports center combined with car show format. I liked it as well. E36 M3, it was about cars, I'll take it. One of these shows needs Dave DeSpain and Alain Cadenet to round them out as the "sideline" girls.

Good point. That's pretty much a flat spot in TGUK, too, (even though they can otherwise do no wrong . You kinda want to see it the lap, but not really the whole lap. And sometimes every bit of the lap is boring. What's the alternative? Some Led Zepplin riffs? The Jeopardy theme? An Eddie Izzard schtick? Tough one...

Reading everyone argue on this board is more entertaining than both Top Gears combined.

I do.
I get pissed any time a TV show ruins a car just because it's old or doesn't have a reputation as a barnstormer or something.
That Aries was in fantastic shape and they're great little cars. Here's a thought, instead of smashing the E36 M3 out of those cars, how aboot they gave them to the kids they had do the driving test?
Sure, chances are good they would have gotten smashed up that way too, but at least then someone would have gotten some berkeleying use out of them.
Lol! If your wife who normally hates car shows likes a show that's supposedly about cars, thats a great way of telling you its a crappy car show.
I try my best to watch it but the silly little nonsense they engage is just too contrived, like someone else said, its an entertainment show.
Grizz wrote: That Aries was in fantastic shape and they're great little cars.
Clarkson voice: They're rubbish. They're the automotive equivalent of a shopping cart: they may serve a useful purpose at the shops, but you wouldn't use one to carry your luggage on vacation. Unlike the James Mays of the world, I expect a car to do more than merely start most of the time and have the shape of a block of cheese.
My own voice: they may have been the platform for some good cars, but an Aries has less appeal to a car enthusiast than a Checker Marathon. At least the Checker has bad, dated styling. The K-car just exists as kind of background clutter.
