I have a 96 s10 4.3 with a noisy transmission with the clutch out. I suspect a failed input shaft bearing. From what I can find replacing the bearing requires splitting the transmission case to push it out the front. At 330k I am a little afraid of what I will find inside & scope creep, a recent fluid service had gray fluid & some metal on the drain magnet. Has anyone had any luck using an inside bearing puller to remove the bearing out the front without transmission disassembly? I feel like an ls ar5 is in this trucks future but would like to extend its life a little without breaking the bank.

The input bearing is most likely pressed onto the input shaft, so it will need to come apart. If the input bearing is bad, the pilot bearing will need to be replaced as well.
If looking for another transmission, it needs to be a S10 NV3500, not the full-size NV3500 as they are a bit different and don't interchange. Easy way to ID is the full size NV will have the trans mount at the end of the tail housing, S10 is farther forward.
