So, my 01 was a pretty high option car. 6 speed, torsen, leather, abs, sport suspension, bose, etc.

Its also silver.

The tan doesn't go with the silver too well, and it has a black top waiting to go on anyway.

Im thinking of changing the whole thing to black. Think that would look a lot better. And cloth seats would be much nicer in the extremes of hot and cold.

What im debating is wether a professional color change will hurt value (car has 160k and a salvaged title, so my guess is hell no), and what black is like to live with in a daily driven miata as far as heat/burning yourself on the console with the sun beating down on it, etc.

My 70 duster and both protege5 have black interiors, but ive never had a convertible with one.

So, what are your thoughts?

Both of my miata's have(had) black interiors. Leaving the car top down in the california sun SUCKED to touch anything, and the aluminum shift knob wasn't any fun. Here in PA, where there are more seasons than blistering heat, it hasn't been bad really. I usually hit/lean on the center console when getting in and out, but it doesn't hold heat for lack of a better term, once you start driving. Still want to strip the interior because racecar though.

I agree, tan interior and silver exterior utterly fails to work for me. Black cloth should be fine.

My MSM has black leather seats. It's not that bad, you just need to throw a small towel over the seat bottom if you're planning on parking in the sun for long in the summer. I agree that the silver/tan combo is not the best and that black would be better. Cloth definitely absorbs sweat better, but then again, it absorbs sweat.

So, I guess its game on. Wouldn't do leather or vynil in it. I remember all too well torching my balls on the black vynil bench in my duster with no ac on 100+ degree days all through high school....

Next stupid question: can you do seat heaters with cloth seats?

The lower half of the dash is the tough part on the interior color change. To do it right you have to pull the dash and replace with an all-black one. Some people have SEM painted the lower half to avoid that hassle.

I agree, Silver with Tan leather looks way wierd. Not sure who at Mazda OK'd that one.

You're overthinking this.

If you want a Miata with a different color combo, sell this one for $1800 and get another one that you like for $2500.

In reference to seat heaters:

Random thing I saw on one of those survival shows-If you're really cold, instead of rubbing arms, hands, etc, rub your kidneys, and your body will heat up faster. I don't know if that's true, but should my sprite ever move under its own power, the only heat I have planned is electric seat heaters in the lumbar area.

just remember this.. never equate vinyl with leather. in the hot sun Black Vinyl will sear your skin and stick to you. Black leather, being a natural material, will not. Yes, it will be hotter than fabric, but not add butter and fry to taste like vinyl

When it's hot out, just put the top up with the windows down, when you park in the sun.

You can do seat heaters with cloth, my 89 Saab had them.

Another confirmation, if you need it, that Yes, seat heaters work just fine with cloth seats. (2014 Rondo. Enjoyed them tonight, actually.)

I keep an old , light coloured blanket in the trunk. On hot days I'll throw it over the seats if the car is parked in the sun. A couple of cheap beach towels work well, too.

Do, pretty much go for it is what im hearing.

Sem dye applied appropriately and black covers are the plan. Only things ill need to source are a black windblocker (the netting wont take the dye) and black carpets.

Changing color may actually be cheaper and easier than trying to salvage the tan....

I had a NB with black cloth seats and it wasn't a problem. the Voodoo shifter know was.

Now We have a NC with tan leather and a Mustang convertible with red leather. I prefer color vs black any day. If it were me, I would leave the tan interior and do something with the silver paint.
