Anytime I'm welding on a car, I disconnect the battery and ecu just to be cautious not to fry anything. Today I was welding an exhaust hanger on my jeep and it occurred to me, anytime I've ever gone to a custom exhaust shop, the guys throw the car on a lift and go to town. They don't mess with the battery or ecu. Am I being overly cautious by taking these extra steps?
No, it's always a good idea. I tried a non automotive ECU on a UTV once when welding and had a bad ground. Ask yourself if the extra minute or two is worth the PITA of a possible repair.

I never have, however I've only welded on one car with a computer.
Not totally the same thing, but I fried the charging system (regulator rectifier) on a motorcycle welding on it and forgetting to pull the battery. I am pretty careful about it now.
Being too safe > Not being safe enough
Never even thought about it...
I might now.
I've done it a million times. Car don't care. My car is an idiot, however.
