Grew up riding in my dads rampage (until it was t-boned) and I vote for the VW because it's cooler. It just is.

There was a pic of a Rabbit pick up floating around that was black, lowered, with larger 16"-17" chromed replica snowflakes.

Definitely Rabbit.

There are few vehicles I miss more than my rabbit pickup.

That was an awesome little truck.

Rampage. It just looks better (especially in Shelby trim) and it is rated for 1000lbs in the bed, unlike the El Camino of the same time period. So it's a useful trucklette, unlike the slower than slow diesel Wabbit.

That is one of the dorkiest pieces of awesomeness I have ever seen. I have to vote Rampage.

If you are looking for economy, the diesel rabbit. If you are looking for something that actually looks cool, Rampage. If you are looking for something to hop-up (no pun intended), Rampage.

Now this is tougher...

I have enough parts around to keep a Rampage on the road for years.. and a stupid fast rampage would be very easy to build cheap... and in the SHelby Charger exterior stuff they really look awesome..

But a diesel.. in a VW... hummmm... this is nothing like the clear cut omni/gti thing...

The deciding factor is the VW's rust worse than rusty rampages... and command a premium for rusty junk party because the diesel is cool.. but mostly because so many VW guys are even more idiotic than Turbo mopar idiots..

Rampage..
