Title says it all, I've hit a chuckhole hard enough to take out a tire and I'm sure the toe is super screwed now, among other things, to an extent I'm not comfortable with my usual system of driving it 100 miles to the shop my dad works at and letting him deal with it. Its a stock prizm so motorsports friendly is not required. I'll also need a tire mounted and balanced.
Leslie tire in Waterford. M59 and Pontiac lake road.

I have nothing to offer as far as recommendations but I feel for you. I live in the same area and I have never seen roads so bad in my life. Some are completely un-driveable. The brutally cold winter, all the snow, the thawing and freezing and 8 zillion tons of salt they throw down have literally destroyed them. Seems like the broke ass communities have stopped patching them too. Not that it matters as when it snows next, they will just drop a giant plow down on the road and yank all the patches out again making the holes even bigger. Outside my office I went outside to take pictures of the potholes and there was a shock absorber and half a spring laying in the road. Guess that poor guy needs more than an alignment. I don't know what the answer is but I am so disgusted I am actually considering moving south.
People can make fun of Florida all they like; we've got roads smoother than freshly waxed bowling lanes.

You won't catch me making fun of Florida. My son lives down there and I have seen your roads. It's very likely I could be your neighbor in the next couple of years.
This winter makes me seriously regret not buying an old twin I beam ranger,or XJ jeep for DD use and dealing with the fuel bill.
Yesterday I mixed up some exits and had to backtrack a bit on a service drive(The Woodward ave exit right at the beginning of Davidson west IIRC, Highland Park), YOU COULD SEE REBAR IN THE HOLES, the road was 50% holes.
I have no idea how I havent ripped off Toyota's patented BumpFeeler© muffler yet, I'm sure it will have a hole worn in it by spring, its bashed in pretty good. Its a good thing this car came with receipts for the lifetime struts.
I've seen spots where people are driving on the shoulder because it smoother.

Ya I hear the West side is even worse. Some one told me that one of the Mayors over there was threatening to shut down a section of Evergreen unless something is done because it's impassable. I try not to drive any roads that I am not familiar with anymore as you learn where the really bad pot holes are if you drive the same roads often so you can anticipate and avoid them. I drive like I am drunk most of the time, using the shoulder, middle turn lane and swerving all over...........that is if it's safe to do so and it doesn't confuse anyone else. Of course they all are doing the same thing.
In reply to Feedyurhed:
My roommate commutes to HFCC, he's always coming back with stories of vans and pickups missing axles and other such crazy E36 M3.
Its hard to imagine the abuse that vehicles that drive all day for a living must endure like taxis, UPS trucks, FedEx trucks, Buses etc. I can only guess that their mechanics must be realllllyyyyyy busy right about now.
In reply to Feedyurhed:
They all have extra heavy duty suspension and 10 ply tires with 6+" of sidewall, they're fine.
Trucks and busses maybe but taxis and police cars use normal tires and HD for cars suspension but still not truck equivalent for strength or suspension travel. In 30 years of driving in SE MI these roads are the worst I have driven on.
Where are you located geographically? There are a few places I know of who do good work, depending on where you're at.
It doesn't help that our town is bankrupt, I have already seen pot hole crews out but its not really effective.

I'm doing the same thing. I'm only driving on roads and lanes that I'm familiar with. I definitely look like a drunk swerving all over to avoid the nasty potholes (when traffic conditions allow me to do so safely of course). Filling in all the holes doesn't really fix the issue, it just makes it a little bit more bearable until a plow comes by and rips the filler out . I wonder what all the cities are going to do come spring time; I don't even want to imagine the cost of properly fixing the infrastructure. What exactly is making the roads so terrible; is it really just the additional plowing and salting we have seen this winter? I used to live out in the country on dirt roads and those were never even close to as bad as what I see on my daily commute.
I'm also interested in good alignment shops in the SE MI area (Farmington Hills, Novi, West Bloomfield, etc.). I wasn't super happy with the last two shops I went to (and I don't think they were happy with me and my 'abnormal' alignment requests).
What we're seeing is a record settign nasty winter after decades of dwindling road funding.
