Trying to find out where my Zx will go when I attend my first autocross next month. Its a 1980 280zx n/a. Mods are: Full exhaust Full polybushings Race seats with 4pt harnesses

Where would this put me?

If you have a Catalytic converter, and your seats are at least 25lbs. then you would be in Street Touring. If not you are in B Street Prepared.

then Street Prepared … without the cat, it doesn't matter about the seats … if any of the interior is striped out then it moves on to Prepared

it's a PITA to wade through, but all the info is here

That is alot of reading. Gonna take some time to see what else I can do and stay in that class.

BSP if you have an interior - FP or SM if you don't.

the "easy" way is to make a quick reading of the Street rules and allowances … then look at the Street Touring for your car, see what doesn't fit, and decide if you can fix ….

then look through the Street Prep at what's allow, and can you fix it back to that level … if not, then check Prepared ….

edit: drdisque was typing as I was … forgot to mention Street Mod. there is some leeway allowed for interior bits in SM

BSP IIRC, have a friend who used to run his.

You could swap in the L28DET turbo motor (same line item, so the car is treated the same), put on R compound tires that are too sticky to last on the street, and stiff coilovers (plus other assorted fun mods)

Unfortunately, I wouldnt hold out hope for it being too competitive, you are in the same class as 350z's, E36&46 M3's, S2000's, non-turbo 911's...

In Street class it would be ES, where you have to catch the Mazda Miata and Toyota MR2 Spyder. (Swap the Seats, the bushings, and the exhaust excepting the catback to be legal)

It would be STR for Street Touring, where you have to face down the BMW M coupe, Honda S2000, etc. (Add a cat to be legal)

Now, take everything I just told you and file it away as an argument to not throw money at the car thinking it will be competitive and just go out and drive the hell out of it and have FUN

Don't take autocross classing too seriously, especially starting out.

Im mostly driving the zx for fun. Have a 240 that is being built to be competitive but Ill probably end up building the motor in the Zx and get put in Street Mod.
