I found a car to use as a beater when I move down to Columbus. I came well below my budget at $200 although it needs a bit of work. I want to keep the total budget for the car around $1000-1500.
1986 Scirocco 16v. Engine seized up but the body is solid. I plan to drop in another 16v along with Megasquirt.
I know jack about VWs... but always liked that models body stylings.
Scirocco's look cool. I don't know that I'd bother with megasquirt on that car, but then again, you're the one doing the work not me.

Well after dealing with CIS before I would imagine that Megasquirt would be more reliable and run better. It would be much easier to just drop a new engine in and keep the CIS though.
The previous owner also said that the engine was rebuilt before he got it ~1 year ago and the head was ported and polished but who knows.
man I've just never had trouble with CIS. If I ditched it, it would be because it's so archaic.
CIS is the same system they put on old audi quantum synchro station wagons, right? (with the round flapper thing in the big trumpet shaped thing?)
helped a friend bring one back from the dead (sat for a looong time and fuel turned to gum, also dizzy was 180* out from PO) he has a few of them and they have been reliable for him...
if its simple and works... why complicate it? expecially for a beater?

Well the consensus here and on the vortex seems to be stick with CIS for a daily. I guess I will save the MS for my Miata when I put a turbo on it.

I know a little..the 2nd gen Roc doesn't often get the respect it deserves from us Dub guys because the 1st gen is such a "landmark" in our eyes. IMO, we need to rethink that position. OTOH, that's why they're so cheap. I still think a 1st gen Roc is better looking, but behind the wheel, it's like the difference between a 1st & 2nd gen Golf. A little heavier, but more stable & comfortable.
A 16v with a well tuned Megasquirt (and the appropriate metal to get the air in & out) will scream. Most A2 chassis suspension upgrades will fit as well. Nice find, EvanB!
Sciroccos on vwvortex (we haven't split off the A1/A2 cars into separate forums):

I had the pl code 16V from a scirocco in my old caddy. It was rebuilt and bored out a little to 1.9 liters with a Techtonics exhaust system. On CIS it was neat. On megasquirt it was amazing. 156WHP on the dyno. Pulled hard to 7600RPM.
God I miss that truck

Cool. As much as I try to avoid the VW world, I do have a soft spot for Sciroccos and Caddys.
Why did you sell it? That looks like a keeper (although I'm not a fan of the wheel/tire combo).
Didnt sell it. It was totalled in a towing accident.
There is no reason to avoid early watercooled VW's. Fun and cheap. That truck was heavy at 2025lbs.
But yeah to the OP 16V's respond very well to EFI. I used some G60 injectors I had laying around with a BBM fuel rail. Since you need a new motor anyway grab a 2liter out of a passat (cheaper and easier to find in junkyards) and go to town.
Yep, find a Passat in a U-Pull yard with a bad auto trans, pull the 2L, drop it into the Scirocco and go. Cheap, easy fix, that's also a performance upgrade.
Biggest pain with the 16v's and MS is getting all the EFi stuff cheap, especially the fuel rail. I'd keep it CIS unless you have bigger plans for the car.
Owned an 87 16V back in the day. Might've been an 88. That car was a sweet handler...

Unless you're willing to go ghetto like me. $20 from Home Depot. Made from Type L residential copper plumbing.
But yeah, you can't just go to the junk yard and get the EFI stuff like most other cars.
What is the bore spacing on the injector ports? I only ask because the 924 I'm working on is 96mm, the turbo-dodges I've owned over the years are also 96mm. One might find something that works from ye olde salvage yard.

Doesn't the passat engine have the fuel rail and injectors?

Nope. It runs on a later version of CIS.

I don't think the spacing is the same. In any case, the fuel rail for a 16v is a little different than on most cars. To clear the intake manifold, it has to have long "legs" that stick down between the runners to the injector ports. See Corey's picture.

Got it.
I found an engine from a 96 Passat with only 59k miles in a local junkyard that I am probably going to pick up.

I don't think '96 came with that engine. The last year was probably 93.
Yep, '93 Passat was the last car with the 9A 2.0l 16v. '96 4cyl Passat will have an ABA 8v 2.0l. They're not compatible.
