Were many (any) turbo RWD cars ever really competitive on a national level at autocross, in stock (or any other) classes?

FD RX-7's were the hot ticket in SS for a while.

I know there are some guys working hard on turbo Miatas in SM2. They've podiumed in the past, but the new tire regs work in the Miata's favors. I'm sure Tom could say more!

Merkurs usually fare well at the Challenge (well seven years ago they did ;) )

Hopefully I can get my WGA fixed this week so I can autoX this weekend.

mr2 in C-Stock has been a popular choice hasn't it?

A turbo s2000 won SM2L this year.

XP winning Elise this year (Zust) is turbo.

DS(L) winner BMW 135i (Strelnieks).

FC and FD RX-7, Solstice GXP, and way back in the day the SVO Mustang did OK.

I imagine you're asking since the Hyundai Genesis Coupe Turbo R-Spec will probably be the hot ticket in whatever stock class it gets dropped in?

This little Euro carmaker once built a car called the 911 turbo that has done well in many motorsports circles.

Nope. Was just wondering. More so for older stock classes (SVO/FC/etc) is what piqued my curiosity.

Back in the late 80s/early 90s, the SVO and StarQuests were doing pretty well in GStock, IIRC.

The XP lotus is now supercharged, custom twin screw in it. I sometimes feel bad, I introduced the driver to autocross and it has been downhill since then.

Sportscar magazine did a profile i think last year on two wild SM rx7s, one was a three rotor, and i think the other was turboed still. Crazy stuff, way expensive though.

yeah, the black one is the current SM2 (now SSM) national champion 3(?) years running. (Erik Strelnieks)... His wife is the current DSL champion in a BMW 135i.

Not turbo, but the 911 GT3 is the current SS champion

The starquest and SVO would probably be the main ones from the 80s. The problem with the SVO is replacement parts to keep it stock class legal are no longer available. Other than that it would probably have been the best older one.

The Turbo MR2 is in BS now, and one actually fared pretty well last year. I think he placed in the top 3 at nationals.

From the rulebook:

Alternate components which are normally expendable and considered replacement parts blah blah blah These allowances are strictly to allow components to be replaced from alternate sources other than the original manufacturer.

What's no longer available that would cause problems?

On a car that age, "normally expendable" is pretty much everything but the body shell no? What doesn't wear out after 20 years?

There are a couple of serious efforts to put a Miata on the podium in SM2, but I don't count mine among them.

Chris Swearingin is my pick to be the first guy with a jacket in a turbo Miata.

The problem is it's basically the whole suspension that's not available. You can make certain parts work, but the actual physical design is different. So if somebody called you out it would not go well. Even if you could procure a set of OEM parts (which are worth their weight in gold), the cost would be so high you'd be better off buying a Z06.
