anybody know?

Yea this exactly!!
I think the lowered older cars with wheels and sometimes flares are generally called "kyusha" which if I remember correctly just generally means old car. JNC is a good resource for photos of those cars and some explanation to the terminology:

Oil cooler just stuck on the front is dumb, but I love it anyway.

I'm still a member but I haven't posted in years, I still appreciate the blog.
If any of you want to burn countless hours staring at Japanese cars of that era on really cool wheels, Park Baker's blog is the place: https://high-top-fade.blogspot.com/

what was the reason that the Skylines mounted their oil coolers externally?

One thing that cracked me up after reading a bit about the old days of Japanese racing was the origin story of those OK stickers that many of the cars always had...
...was actually a condom company! LOL
I had been thinking "I'd like to see a pony car done up that way, maybe a Mopar A body" as I was reading this thread.

Glad to see I'm not the only one whose thoughts went there.

I um Noticed a thing...
I kinda want a challenger with a 70's style splitter and Fender Mirrors..
Only one car has been posted that I didnt care for - the exhaust car.
Gosh, some gorgeous JDM rides here, keep em coming!
I've had the idea for a little while of something like this sunbird I saw today, or a mustang II or some such, done in this style
