No, because you actually like the car, even in a social vacuum. It's OK that you appreciate others liking it too.
You didn't buy it just because you thought other people would think it's cool.
That's poseurism. Like Keith's BIL up there.

And where do we stand on the tricky topic of loving what you think other people will hate, just to make sure you don't go unnoticed? To my feeble logic, that's the absolute height of poseury.
That's not poseur... It's duchebaggery. Admittedly, the difference can be a fine line.

I find this thread funny as 5 of my cars according to people here are poser cars. I actually found it a bit insulting. I have worked dam hard to afford them and I maintain them to the highest standard and yet somehow I am a poser. This thread has been eye opening.
Some of it I am hoping is tongue and cheek but that is not immediately clear to me.
After asking for the definition of poser + this post, you seem to be looking to be insulted.
The VAST majority of people in this thread have clearly stated it's the ATTITUDE of the people who own certain cars that makes them a poser, not the car itself.

I also find it douchey/lame when I see people constantly asking on social media: "Hey guys, what do you think of X wheels/wing/body kit/exhaust/etc."
The vast majority of the time it reminds of guys going back to the Super Street/NOPI Nights look of the late 90s, which I think is terrible. My standard response if I don't like it?
"Yeah, I think that is hideous, but it's not my car. If YOU like it, go for it! berkeley what anyone else thinks of it. Build your car the way you want it, not what you think others will like."

As for cars, I'll nominate most anything from the 'decal era' of the 1970s/1980s.

Does anyone else remember the Chevette 'S'? Blacked out trim with red decals was supposed to make it GTI-ish. Epic Fail.

Hey! I had a car that resembled that. 350 Pontiac, 2bbl carb, single exhaust. Yep, a poser.

So, the epitome of a Poser car is anything from the Pro Street era?

I might be a Poser: Here's my version of the 80s Canyon Carver era.

I admit it took me months to decide what wheels to order for my BRZ back in '2022. If I drove more I was thinking about buying another set just to mix up the look once in a while. But I don't want to spend another $4k on a different wheel/tire setup.

I was not sure if I should be.
As I get older I find being judgmental based on stupid things like the car someone drives cringe worthy. I realized a long time ago I probibly missed out on meeting a bunch of really cool people because I judged them based on material things like the close they ware or the car they drive. I was stupid.
GRM generally has been accepting of everyone as long as you are not a shiny happy person. It is what has kept this place going while so many others have failed.

Harley's in general.
Trucks that have been modified to be significantly worse at being trucks then when they started.
Well-to-do friend of a friend "leveled" his brand new Platinum Super Duty and put some hideous (and hideously expensive) wheels and tires on it. I commented to our friend in common that he'd taken a perfectly great truck, and paid money to make it worse at doing the thing it was meant to do (tow heavy).
He had a ready retort: "yeah. But he specifically said those wheels were made for the weight rating of the truck."
I said, "yeah, but you know who else made wheels that were good right up to the stated limits of the truck? Ford! And that was $5,000 ago!"

Yep, don't think you should. From car meets and stuff, I've met lots of cool people (also lots of douche nozzles). I remember one time years ago, one of my E30 buddies had recently picked up an E46 M3 and let me take it out a for spin.......have wanted one ever since.
When we got back another guy, didn't know nearly as well, said, "Hey if you enjoyed that, want to take mine out?" It was a few month old 2010 M3, DCT, Borla catback.......absolutely glorious.
Then there were guys driving Lambo's in Affliction shirts, sequined jeans, etc, being absolute condescending douche's if you even looked at their cars and you weren't wearing Porsche/Ferrari gear. These tend to be the type of guys who drive like shiny happy people on the street, refuse track days or learning how to drive, etc. I only had to go on one "drive" when some of those guys showed up before I didn't attend any others.
Doing 140+ on the highways on the way to the twisties, parking it in the corners only to blast the gas again, etc.

When I was younger I'd see loads of old guys with money with cool stuff they didn't really use as intended. Naturally I thought they were posers instead of a guy who could now afford cool stuff.
I am sure if the 17yr old me saw the 62yr old me on my sweet BMX bike he'd think I was a poser. I am OK with that because I kinda am.

I've done a couple of "long cons" on repeat offenders in that category, but to avoid offending, I'll keep the details to myself.
Thinking more and more about this thread (and what I said). For the record, I don't care nearly as much as I used to. Lately, I've cared less and less about this stuff, and especially the part on how the world views me. If people want to blow their money and time buying dumb vehicles and making good vehicles worse, that's all on them. Same goes for me, too! I think a big part of getting older/growing up/etc. is learning how to accept yourself and others for who/what they are. You can like things or not like things, and not have to care as much.
It still kinda does bother part of me when people do this (hence my post) and I can laugh at them, but it doesn't anger me anymore. It used to drive me nuts when I saw a car or a trend applied to a car I didn't like. It more or less amuses me now, if that makes sense.

Right after I graduated college, I moved back to the family home in Sand Springs (living there by myself). The Jehovah's Witness's liked to come around on Saturday mornings.
After the 2nd time of me answering the door in my boxers with a beer in one hand and a joint in my mouth, they quit stopping by.
I almost typed a response to this thread yesterday. I try to not engage in negative or demeaning behavior. Internally I can recognize traits or behavior I don't agree with or understand from others, but I don't typically voice it. Or at least the older I get the less I do. What good comes from it? Personally I think it's pretty absurd and self righteous. It also seems like another way for someone to divide US from THEM when we are all a little bit of everything mixed together typically.
But I'm bored so I'll pile on anyway.
I used to think race cars were cool and now I don't. I mean I still do, but I've kinda seen the curtains pulled back on what they really are. They kinda fall in line with a lot of other vehicles modified by their owners listed here. While they may be able to go around a race track fast they make really E36 M3ty cars for anything else. Even the so called streetable ones are just taking a really good overall vehicle and narrowing it's ability to do more things decent. Hell at least a brodozer truck, or a Harley, or a fart can Honda, or most other cars seem to match that reduced metric in usefulness. I know this is apples to oranges, but that's kinda what this thread feels like anyway. A mismanagement of perspective.

Race cars? See, I think that's a specific tool for a specific task. I think using it on the street screams "look at me", but using a caged track car on the track is just the right tool for a specific job.

The very last line was "when have car enthusiasts ever been logical"
I was indeed poking fun at myself.
Again I thought when I put a dividing line between coupes and convertible Mondials folks would get the absurdity. A part of me thinks that but I also know it's silly.
Now as for race cars; I've owned several over the last 36 years and I can say without hesitation that this is the dumbest hobby ever. Spending gobs of money for something I drive 15hrs a year and to make it worse I have another vehicle that I drive 27hrs a year to drag the other car to the track.

One of my favorites is at the end of the B-movie Bachelor Party they take the guys 911 and jack the back end up and paint flames on it like it was a 72 Nova.
If someone wants to do that, while I may think it looks hideous, I'm now in the "OK whatever" zone.
The one I can't and won't relent on is a certain chain Italian restaurant; it's morally wrong and Nonna Catalano is rolling in her grave............tutti merda is what I call it. I know I'm being insufferable about it but I refuse to relent.

I'm starting to think we're cut from the same cloth. I'm pretty sure I posted a picture of that Bachelor Party Porsche in some other thread here recently.
Are you speaking of Italian Denny's - aka Olive Garden?
