I'll admit I've been watching every episode with SWMBO, but the chicks are hot so lay off
However, all of you should go watch Season 6, Episode 7 (it should be free on PBS for another week). They do a complete race at "Brooklands" (okay, it's really Goodwood, but since Brooklands doesn't exist anymore) and it's awesome. Blower Bentley's, Bugatti, MG, etc. Fantastically well done race.
This should be the link that works: http://www.pbs.org/video/2365662717/
I was wondering if anyone else here caught that episode. Awesome cars.
Plot device to kill off a character?

It doesn't seem to be, the racer isn't that big of a character.
It was a plot point to give a character an excuse to do something...
You should watch Miss Fischer's Murder Mysteries if you like Downton for the reason you say you do.

I've really enjoyed the show more than I thought I would. The show that follows, Mercy Street has been pretty good to though a bit heavy on the amputations. I would not have been a good patient back then.
My wife watches and I read. Then I saw the racing - she got excited for me.

My wife and I finished series 6 back in December. We got the connections! Yeah, that episode was good. I actually enjoyed the early series.
Speaking of Downton Abbey, I don't watch it but I keep up to date via Rodney Anonymous's Twitter feed: https://twitter.com/RodneyAnon
The Dead Milkmen singer does a nice job with the updates. He mentioned the car stuff, too.
Great episode! I would like to have seen greater speeds from the cars, but no doubt Big Insurance put the speed limit on. FYI, from the 1920's through 1979 a Grand Prix driver had a 1 in 5 chance of dying if he raced more than 4 seasons. Until Jackie Stewart made himself the F1 Safety spokesman, there was virtually zero attention given to driver OR spectator safety.
Modernized track safety, There was a wall between the pits and the track.
