I have not been on a roadbike in over 40 years. My last few bikes were all mountain bikes. The one roadbike I always lusted over were those weird "tadpole" style trikes. An older, but still in decent shape, Catrike Expedition came up for sale nearby, so I went to go look. It's mine now.
It's very odd to be sitting that low, but the pedaling motion was not as odd as I feared it would be. I need to replace the pedals with clipless, put some new rubber on it, and add blinkies and flags before I start adding up the miles. Sitting low, even little pedal down the street feels like I am doing 100mph.
Looks like fun! I like all forms of cycling, and the tadpole trikes are one of the better forms of recumbent IMO. Clueless pedals make a huge difference on a recumbent. Given the low stance, the blinkies and flags sound wise. Enjoy!
Cool. I had two of them. I bought a Catrike Trail and I inherited a Villager.
They're super comfy to ride, and when I needed to stop an rest, I'd usually just stay sitting on the trike because it's like being in a recliner.
Climbing hills is different than a bike because you're not standing over the pedals.
If you do any fast downhills, it will benefit from a little extra toe-in on the front wheels.
Absolutely get clipless pedals ASAP. Otherwise, if your foot slips off when you're moving, you will immediately run over your leg and crash spectacularly.
Use sunscreen on the tops of your legs.
Catrikes are fun.
With the big rear wheel, that should be a pretty fast trike. I think the Catrike 700 was good for 55 mph.
I linked a long video on here detailing some guy's daily ride. You have to be pretty into it to sit through the whole thing. But the funny part was that about 45 minutes into his ride, he gets passed by a Lime green Lamborghini Miura!
Absolutely no mention of it whatsoever.
Make sure to get a left side mirror and some hood blinky lights, or you will be almost invisible on the road, even with the flag.
These are awesome on Long bike trails, but o would only ride on the roads around 5 am when there was very little traffic.
My 85 year old father put 15,000 miles on his Catrike Villager in two years.
Woody, I begin to think you like Tadpole style trikes.
