I thought it was a little better than the 2 Fast 2 Furious. That was my least favorite. I've been turned off by all the over-the-top action. The one-liners were funny though. You can put me with the smug bastards above.

Not gonna lie, I watch the movies for the pr0n. Car-related and otherwise. My wife asked why the female starting the drag race in the scene with Toretto and Letty at race wars had to have all her glory showing, I told her if there weren't any half-nekkid women flailing around it wouldn't be FF. The plots (or lack thereof) don't bother me, even though I do roll my eyes and shake my head at the more wacky stuff. TL/DR, I don't take these movies seriously, to me they are just goofy fun.
BTW, while the Caprice in this one was cool, I still lust for the Jensen Letty drove in FF6.

I'm not smug about it. I just think they're stupid. Doesn't mean other types of movies aren't stupid, too. I don't get the appeal of the Die Hard franchise, either. Comic books and comic-book-based movies are supposed to be fantasy, so it's easier (and usually more worthwhile) to suspend disbelief. And plenty of comic book movies suck, too.
I just think it's kind of funny that the F&F franchise gets such a free pass here, when (for instance) the remake of Gone In 60 Seconds gets so roundly lambasted. Anyone who doesn't like F&F gets treated like some kind of evil arrogant shiny happy person.
But I said I wasn't going to say anything else. Hopefully I can stick to that now.

Same here. I tried the first one, suffered the second just in case. Then someone recommended the Tokyo Drift movie, whichever number that was. Just didn't get it. Probably the only one of my non-racing car circle of friends that feels this way. (Saw many Facebook posts on Saturday about crying like babies.)
It's one thing to not enjoy the movies, it's something else to step into a conversation between people who do enjoy them to inform them how superior you are by not being a sheeple who likes them. I mean, I don't care much for kids, dogs or guns - but I don't post in all the kiddoggun threads about how kiddoggun enthusiasts are dumb and how by not having kiddogguns I'm somehow on a higher moral plane.
FF7 did require a healthy suspension of disbelief on just about every level. That's okay, I walked in with my belief fully suspended. The Paul Walker goodbye was melodramatic, but so's the whole FF franchise. It's full of big tough guys with big squishy centers.
I think it was better than FF6. At least there was no 30 mile runway
What I don't understand is, that if you don't like it, why are you coming in this thread to tell everyone that you don't like it?
Obviously the OP was wanting to know who saw it and what they thought, not who dislikes the franchise and will never watch it.
It's not that this franchise gets a free pass (because it doesn't), it's that every time a F&F post gets made, the hater brigade has to come in a tell everyone that they don't like the franchise. That's most likely why people are being called smug.
F&F isn't the only thing that happens with. For example, if someone asks about info on a Chevy truck they are looking at, someone always has to make a point that they hate GM and everything that's wrong with them.
I caught myself doing that a long time ago and stopped. Having an opinion is one thing, but it's completely different to just to come into a thread and state your hate when you weren't asked to. If you don't like it, don't comment. Move on to the next thread.
If anybody else besides nick cage was in the gone remake I would have loved it. As it was I liked it in spite of him.
I understand everyone has different tastes and not everyone will get any enjoyment out of the FF franchise, but to come into a thread about the newest movie with the express purpose of proclaiming to the world that you have never seen any of the seven films is the text book definition of a smug bastard. That doesn't make anyone evil, just arrogantly smug.
I have seen all the films except tokyo drift, tried to watch it twice and fell asleep both times. I think the aura of the first film was the fact that some of the cars were actually built and tuned. After that it has slowly continued to progress towards CG and mockups. I would be extremely hyped if FF7 was a full return to roots with all the cars being real tuned cars.
That said I may go see this one in a theatre depending on the timing of things. But highly likely I won't until it hits redbox. Seems to be my go to these past couple of years for any movie I want to see. Still waiting on a couple from past years to hit redbox or netflix.
Y'all don't get to enough local asphalt short tracks. That Caprice was a good representation of a Saturday night street stocker in primer. So the big question is: How many Caprice's will be built like the FF7 car?
In reply to mtownneon:
If I had the money I would build one almost identically, except mine would be a Pontiac.

I've lusted after a street stock build since the Monte in FF3.... I've not seen this one yet, but it sounds like I need a box.
people have opinions and express them on a public forum.. oh noes!!
i don't get the love that is felt for these movies amongst gearheads: they make car guys look like a bunch of lunatics to the general public, and they just flat out suck from a plot standpoint. i won't say you can't like it and i won't hold it against you as a person, but i think i should be able to poke my head into this thread and say that i don't get it..
I smugly saw the beginning of one of the FF franchise where they are smugly unhooking a trailer from a smug semi and smugly shut the smug movie off when the trailer brakes smugly failed to lock up when they popped off the smug gladhands.
Muddersmugger.
Still not as bad as Torque though...holy berkeley that movie was pure E36 M3.

As far as I can tell, the title of this thread doesn't stipulate that you had to like the movie or the franchise to participate. I also personally didn't detect any smugness or self-superiority in their posts. They just didn't like the movie or the past F&F movies. Last I checked this was an opinion forum and that's okay.

Who said they hadn't seen any of the films and had something negative to say about them? I must have missed that one.

But why is it necessary? Obviously the first several posts were positive, but then people started in on that they've never seen them or didn't like the franchise. What's the purpose of informing people of that?
Also, the thread is labeled as "Alright who saw it? FF7", not "Who saw FF7? Give me all your feelings toward the franchise"
Yes everyone is free to give their opinion here, but honestly, it's tiring to see people be so goddamn negative about things and have to have their voice heard. Like I already said, if I don't agree with it or don't like it, I won't comment in the thread.

Sound do me like you need to grow some thicker skin. We have disagreements in many threads. Why is this one different? The title also wasn't "FF7 appreciation thread" He asked who saw it, and opinions on what people thought of it is a natural extension of that. Seriously, you guys are coming across as more than a little defensive.

Actually they are still doing many of the crazy stunts and stuff without CG. In 6 the flip car actually did flip the cop cars and did it better than the standard ramps and rams. In the new one they really did drop those cars from a C130. The off road cars were actually built and driven same with all the main actors cars. Somewhere I have a spec sheet of what parts went into the main cars of the 4th movie including the F Bomb Camaro and Dom's Charger which is still being used up to this current movie.
I am not saying they don't use any CG but they do still do a lot of the crazy stuff and build the cars.
I won't comment on the movie, as I haven't seen it.
One thing that I've always found strange with the FF franchise and the car culture that it was inspired by, and helped to create is this:
When I go to drag race, circle track event, hot-rod show, autocross, road race or track event I find "car people" who are immediately friendly, and eager to talk about cars / modifications / racing. I never feel out of place, and everyone seems to be there for the love of the hobby, and the cars.
When I attended my first NOPI event in 2002 I encountered a very different crowd. Instead of being welcoming, the attendees were fronting attitudes and acting like wanna-be badasses. Instead of guys laughing and talking cars, there was a whole lot of posing going on....and guys leaning against their cars with crossed arms hoping to look tough. (although the idea of looking tough while leaning on an atomic green Civic with a giant wing was comical--- they didn't seem to get the joke)
Then it hit me........these shows weren't about the cars at all.....it was about the women. Women were attracted to this scene. It became "hip" and tons of wannabes threw bodykits on their cars in hopes of attracting women. This is why the guys weren't friendly like at other "car" events. The guys at the NOPI show were competing for the girls. Now this isn't the case with all of them---as I'd guess 10-15% of that group were genuine car people. But for most.....it was more about putting on a "tough" attitude and letting the ladies see how "cool" you were.
I see the F&F franchise as feeding that mindset, and being born from it. That's why the movies repel me.
Anyways---- I hope you guys enjoy the new movie. Not sure if anyone else has encountered the same thing as me...but figured I'd share my smugness!

It has nothing to do with needing thicker skin, it has everything to do with the fact that it makes no sense why people go out of their way to let people know their dislike for something.
It's no different than overhearing my neighbor telling my other neighbor how great his Chrysler Sebring has been for him and then I stroll over and jump into the conversation by saying that I've never owned a Sebring and will never own one because I think they are huge pile of junk. It makes no sense why anyone awould do that and it isn't any different than what goes on here.
I could have commented that I didn't like F&F 2 and 4, but that wasn't the point of the original post. I haven't seen FF7, so if I were to have commented, it would have been that I hope to see it next weekend.
