surprised that except for me, nobody has mentioned space battleship Yamato.. known as Star Blazers here in the US. I even posted a link to a site where you can watched the updated version for free

I mentioned it a few posts before you did.

It's been so long since I've watched Star Blazers (30 years or so), that part of me doesn't want to potentially wreck my childhood memories of it. That happened to me when I watched Speed Racer again during high school after not seeing it for years. Granted, I'm more familiar with Anime now, so the cheesy parts of Speed Racer that I didn't remember as a 6 year old would be expected.

I even wasted some money on the Japanese models when I was younger and dumber, somewhere I have Endless Waltz on DVD. I played the hell out of some Mech Warrior too, so I have a thing for giant fighting robots.

I rather like UC-Universe Gundam, but have never been all that fond of the many alternate universe series (Wing, G, etc.). Still annoys me to no end that we're having to wait so ridiculously long for the conclusion of Gundam Unicorn.

I've generally been more fond of the Macross (First part of Robotech to many of us) universe though than Gundam. I just wish things weren't so berked with licensing on them that we'll likely never see the newer stuff released here officially...

Obviously all the Miyazaki stuff is great and there's LOTS of more obscure stuff of his available if you download via bittorrent. Pompoko, Panda Go Panda, Hols: Prince of the Sun, etc.

Neon Genesis Evangelion hasn't been mentioned yet? I show it to my kids that are that age. It does have quite a bit of robot bloodshed, though. No tentacle porn, at least. Also mushi-shi is fun. Sherlock Hound has some episodes directed by Miyazaki and is lots of fun.

And while not anime, there's some amazingly great American stuff out there that you should see. Stuff in rotation at our place off the top of my head: Avatar, Korra, Teen Titans (and the less serious Teen Titans Go), Adventure Time, Batman (the 1992 series), Gravity Falls, Powerpuff Girls & Samurai Jack.

Avatar & Korra are straight up must-watch, especially if you have girls. One of the few animated shows out there that aren't at all cringe-worthy on the gender dynamic front. Teen Titans is solid that way as well once you get past the costumes.

Strangely I didn't follow the cannon of Gundam like I have so many other Scifi series, I discovered it when watching TV while staying in a hotel room in the early/mid 90's we didn't have cable/satellite at home so I didn't get to see it episodically.

Star Wars: Clone Wars, is Anime-ish on Netflix now too, just added it to my list a few days ago. I've caught an episode or two and really enjoyed it, but intend to watch the entire series in order soon. If you're a Star Wars fan, the animated Clone Wars fills the gap between movies II & III.

Honestly, the remake I posted a link to is -very- good. They added a lot to the storyline without taking anything away. They even fixed a few problems by adding more female characters. I was leary at first as well.. but I totally recommend. Except for the ship shots that are all CGI, everything is true to the original character designs as well

its tough to tell you what to seek out without knowing what the library's inventory is...

and there's some free stuff on HULU too...

stroker wrote: I'm generally tied to what's available on DVD at the local library. Keep in mind I'm watching with a 6 and 4 year old. I'd watch some stuff by myself but as I'm in class this semester I'm trying to avoid any excess TV time beyond catching up with Breaking Bad. I've been meaning to watch Akira for years but just haven't gotten around to it. I think that's a bit too grown up for the kids, though. We've got the Miyazaki boxed set so for the moment we're good with those. We started watching Bamboo Blade which they liked. I guess I was asking in the hope of finding something similar to that without a lot of graphic stuff...

I got through the first two episodes and most of the third before it kept freezing up. Definitely good, though. Thanks.

Unfortunately, the streaming doesn't seem very stable... and the pop-ups are worrisome... I'm guessing I'll have to run the anti-malware program more often...

I won't get into any details.. but the Yamato's guns can fire both energy and shells.. it's great to watch in battle

I'm up to Ep. 8. Yes, the shell/energy thing is a cool idea. I agree the changes are good. Plus, much like looking at original Star Trek shows and noticing how it looks behind what we have today, the "technological updates" are also welcome.

I just wish the website was more stable. Seems I can only get 2-3 episodes in a row before it locks up and I have to back out and start over.

It's a Shonen fighting show, which means it goes on, and on, and on, and on. See also: Dragon Ball Z, Naruto. Completely not my cup of tea, but plenty of others really like the genre.

If you watch Dragonball, do yourself a favor and get the shortened version (I think it is called Dragon ball Z Kai). It gets rid of the three episode charging screams and makes it much easier to watch.

Well since the thread is back up, new episodes of Bleach are out...also there's been another season of Samurai Jack, at least one more of GiTS:SAC, AoT is still going, and there's an Initial D spinoff series called MF Ghost coming out...
