Not going used, budget is $600, must look like a couch instead of a futon, and sitting comfort is about 95% more important than sleeping comfort.
Any suggestions? I'm currently looking at the Ikea Friheten.

The only thing I remember about futons is from college, and that is a solid mattress support surface is way more comfortable than a series of bars.
Do you hate sitting?
Do you hate sleeping?
Buy a futon.
I suspect my opinion has been tainted by cheap Wal-Mart spec ones, though. I'll say don't cheap out, and you'll likely get one that doesn't suck.

Then you are looking at the wrong piece of furniture

I dropped over a grand on a fancy Futon couch in the early 00's. It made it about 3 years before it was intolerable. I should have splashed out for the coil sprung mattress.
They are just layers of cotton and pressure compresses them over time. What seems plush and supportive at first will be rock hard after time passes. Even with a foam core all the cotton that makes them a Futon will still turn into a hard mat. Trying to fluff a 150lb mattress like a pillow is tough work but helps for a few weeks.
I don't use it anymore, but I still have my cheapo frame and suede thick futon mattress serving as a spare couch/doge bed.....it actually is comfortable.
My parents have some kind of Ikea futon that I slept on for a few nights recently. It was firmer than I expected, which was much better than too soft (that's what she said). But, it doesn't get used much, and I don't think I ever sat on it. I'm not positive what model it is though (it's maybe a year old).

Is it a futon, or a pull out sleeper?
I actually slept on one of their futons for a year. The next year I used it as a couch. It was pretty great as a bed actually, I think I'd rate it higher than the two beds after it. As a couch, it was mediocre in comfort and I don't like the look.
I'm really hoping that their sofa-beds are the happy medium.
I like a good futon, but the good ones I've used were all custom made for my weight (or mine and SWMBOs). There's a world of difference between a good, custom made futon and the cheaper ones at places like Ikea.
If you do end up with a cheaper, foldable one for a couch, keep in mind that they have a very limited life span (2-3 years depending on how often they get used).
