I've been eyeing the newest release from Metallica in iTunes for a couple days.

Does anyone have it yet? Is it worth the $15 or whatever it costs?

Thanks!

What ive heard in the radio does not impressed. I was waaaay past done after st anger, and then I got death magnetic for 5 bucks new. I don't think I made it through one full listen. I can't do it anymore..

Most of what I hear on the radio sounded like metallic trying too hard to be early metallica......kinda comes off flat

I'm friends with the biggest Metallica fan in the world, and he loves it. But he also forces himself to rationalize everything they do.

From what I heard of it, the new record isn't going to make them any new fans.

I do like Metallica a good deal, but I haven't reached fanboi status.

Maybe I'll save the $15 for now to buy wire for my welder...

I have to turn the station when they start playing.... more of the same rehash from the 80's.

I view Metallica as two different bands: Kill Em All through ...And Justice For All (Thrash Metal) and The Black Album-present (Hard Rock). And we don't talk about Lulu.

I've gotten about 1/3rd of the way through the new one. It's not bad, and it seems like they are trying to more or less embrace what they are and not over-complicate songs like they did on Death Magnetic. Not as many "Yeeeah's" and a little less wah-wah pedal on this one, and more straight forward rockin'. That's a good thing.

They are no longer a "Metal" band, and haven't been for a long time, so I don't judge them among their former peers like Death Angel, Testament, Anthrax, etc who are still playing excellent, Thrashy goodness. As a Hard Rock band, it's a pretty solid effort, and from what I've heard so far, the best since the Black Album.

My friends and I break Metallica down the same way but we call it "Pre-EYAAAHHH" and "Post EYAAAAA". The Black album was the start of the Hetfield "EYAHHH!!!!" in the songs.

Listened to the whole album. Worth it.

I'm not happy with what I've heard on XM Octane so far. The vocals, like no inflection of changing tone whatsoever. Maybe when it hits Amazon and I can preview each song for about 30 seconds.

LOL this is the classification system future scholars will use

Reaction to each new Metallica album is more predictable than party-line votes in Congress.

In an interesting turn of events, I found the album on Amazon prime. I have never seen anything from them on there before. But ok.

So it's not bad! If I were going into it expecting pre- EYAAAHH Metallica, I would have been sorely disappointed. But it's a good honest effort.

Am I crazy or is the whole album kinda light on vocals? Do we think his voice is going?

Hetfield hasn't had his voice since he got sober. It kills me to hear him this way. I just can't buy metallica as a rock band and not a metal band. If Tom Araya can still do it, Hetfield should be able to as well. At least....in my head.

But what if they don't want to do it? I like their album as it reminds me a lot of their Black album (which is quite possibly one of the best albums to ever come out of the 90's). Their style changed as they changed. I'm ok with it.

Then again, I'm not a music snob. I'll listen to most anyone at least once and don't mind a lot of Nickleback.

I knew there was something weird here....

Speaking on metallica, the black album is what turned me on to them. I definitely enjoy it. I even enjoyed load and reload to a degree. But the man Hatfields voice changed. The trademark rasp he had was gone. He's got some sort of other gravelly thing going on I just cant do. It hurts my ears.

My first CD ever was the Black Album. I had plenty of cassette tapes before that, but it was my first CD and back then CD's were still a big deal.

Around 1992, I remember going to the record store with my sister to buy a CD to listen to on an upcoming day trip with my family. I picked up a Naughty by Nature CD because that's what all my classmates and friends were listening to at the time, and my sister who drove me there said "why don't you try this one out instead" and put the Black Album in my hand. The cover of the album looked dark and menacing, and I bought it. My mom had just gotten a portable Sony Discman and she let me use it on a long car ride to a relative's house, and I listened to that album about 3 times through that day. I remember my sister telling me that if I liked that one, then their older stuff would melt my face off! In the next few weeks, I went out and bought the rest of their catalog on cassette with my hard earned paper route money.

Face. Melted. Or so I thought.

I then bought Slayer's Seasons in the Abyss as my 2nd CD ever, again, by suggestion of my older sister. I wasn't the same after that.

This is one of the reasons why I refuse to give up drinking. When I am belting out songs in the shower I need to be at 100%

They lost me at the Black Album, so I'll have to listen to see if they can bring me back in.

The "Deluxe" edition looks like a good buy at least. 26(?) songs for $14.99.

I was going to buy A Tribe called Quest's latest album last week. Doing the math and it's cheaper to buy individual songs than the complete album. Which is good because then I only buy the songs I like

I just tried to listen to it. I made it through three songs and went back to my normal work music. Meh.
