In the old days I'd order a part from someone and figure "Hhmmm, it's coming from California. That's gotta be 10 days away. Maybe 12 at the most." Then it'd show up in 7 days and I'd be dancing around the front yard with my box of what ever it was, in my underwear and one sock. My neighbors would understand, I got a package.
Fast forward to today. Now I order something (eBay in this case) and it doesn't matter where it's coming from, cuz I got a tracking number. COOL! Now I can track the progress of my package. I check it and see that they've dropped it off. YES! It's on it's way. Pick out the clean underwear and prepare to do the lambada in the front yard in a few days! I wait 48 hours and check again. YES!! It's left the sorting facility, it's that much closer baby, it's In Transit!! Now, for DAYS it simply says IN TRANSIT. Huh? Where is it? Where is this "transit" place, and just how vast must it be? For crying out loud it's been there for 4 days!! Now the clean underwear needs to be turned inside-out, DANG!
I try to push past the 48 hour mark, 72 hours later I check it and shazaam! It's at the Origin Sort Facility. I get that. It's being sorted. How long can that take? I'll have it tomorrow, it'll be sorted by then! I start stretching for the impending celebratory dance immediately.
The next day I check it so I can see those wonderful words "Out For Delivery" but it's still being sorted? HUH! Oh cummon!
So, one of my packages has been in the Detroit sorting facility for three days....THREE DAYS! That's an hour drive away. I'm way too impatient to wait for, who knows how many hours to get my stuff. At this point, I might have to put new underwear on lest my one-sock and underwear dance might be embarrassing.
They do that with lower priority stuff, it will just sit at the warehouse for a few days while the fast shipping is taken care of. At least that's how I imagine it works. Only really bothers in situations like when my $1200 laptop that ASUS (berkeley those guys) shipped back to me fedex ground without insurance.
If you want fast shipping buy from McMaster-Carr, they ship out UPS presorted, you can buy something at 8 am and have it by 3pm, ground shipping.
It's sitting behind the conveyer belt, where it got knocked by the Sonic Air package as it came through. They clean every Saturday, so it should be there sometime next month.
Drives me nuts too.
I did order a package from Atlanta yesterday afternoon that showed up by 10 this morning. I not sure I could have driven to Atlanta and back in the time it took in transit.
I always enjoy UPS tracking.
Your shipping order has been recieved.
Package has been picked up from Indianapolis.
Package is in transit to Dallas, Texas.
Package is in transit to Tuktoyaktuk, NWT
Package is in transit to Tokyo, Japan.
Package is clearing customs in Winnipeg, Man.
Package has been buried in warm peat to age.
Package is enroute Winnipeg to Montreal PQ.
Package is back in Winnipeg, as peat aging has not been sufuicient...
And so on. I'm pretty sure they just add stuff onto the list to make you feel good.

I would think that you in your underwear with one missing sock would actually put your package in question...
US post is broken. It shouldn't cost $40 to mail a bike chain to Canada. The prices have gone crazy in the last two years.
They all suck and the bait and switch of UPS Mail Innovations for regular UPS service sucks berkeleying ass. Especially when I don't get regular mail service at my address.

Don't get me started.... USPS tracking info is a joke... Bought something from Roack Auto... USPS had it scheduled for delivery... and 6 days later I got it

And just to follow up on that, if I don't but my box number in the ship to address, the package will get sent back or some stupid BS charge for getting it delivered. It just sucks they don't specify how it will be delivered.

I was watching the tracking once and my package was in my state. The next day when I check to see if it was out for delivery, it was a state away. Then it stayed there for a whole 'nother day before it returned to place it was before. Damn!!!!!
Usually I don't bother checking any tracking numbers. It'll get here when it gets here.

I'm sorry for the loss of your enthusiasm about life.
(Joking! Really, really joking. Wish I was as zen... Currently trying not to pester the makers of my new motorcycle seat who say up front that stuff usually gets out the door in four days but can be as much as twenty... I've set a google calendar reminder to check in 25 business days after the order if it's not here. Hopefully I don't develop too many more nervous tics by then...)
USPS tracking is the worst. I swear none of my E36 M3 updates until after it's already delivered.
Did i mention that i recently had a small package delivered to me via USPS? It was delivered February 21st. Just from Arizona. I thought the seller had screwed me since i paid on January 25th. He maintained that he had sent it out the next day.
Lo and behold: The package had a January 26th "ship date" sticker on it from USPS.
What the berkeley took them so long? I'm pretty sure i could have ridden my BIKE out there and back faster than that.

Hahaha I'm trying to be less twitchy and neurotic. After ordering things from China that came faster than things from the east coast, I said berkeley it. Once in awhile I'll order something and be Ralphie in A Christmas Story and that's ok too.

E36 M3, try the last two months! It used to cost ~$5 to ship a few Hot Wheels first class, now it's $9.79 as the lowest damn price. Berkeley those thieves!

One of my packages was in the detroit sort facility for a few days. This morning it shows that it left the detroit sort facility. A few hours later (see, I'm impatient) it shows that.......it's back in the detroit sort facility.
The other one is out for delivery though

My favorite is the "In atlanta sorting facility" for 3 days. Then the mail man gives me my shipment, and it still says in the sorting facility?

The second package has been in the Detroit sorting facility since the 22nd. The expected deliver date was the 22nd. Upon closer inspection, it looks like the package left Detroit, then went back, and is now partying with Kwame Kilpatrick?
I've never had an issue with USPS, I was only venting about my lack of patience and how these tracking numbers make me look daily to see the progress.
Now I'm glad I have it haha.
My BT OBDII dongle from newegg has been showing delivered by Fedex) at my local post office for 2 days now. FedEx uses local USPS for envelope rural route delivery here... I expect it sometime in the next couple days but the lack of tracking is driving me nuts. Just a couple years ago there would be no feedback whatsoever... but now that I have it I MUST HAVE video surveillance of my packages at all times!!!

In reply to Giant Purple Snorklewacker:
Now I want to get a cell phone with a camera and a giant battery extension pack and try to hack something together so it takes a picture of where it is every minute or so and emails it to me, and then mail it someplace (hopefully to someone who can mail it back)... It would mostly be blackness or the inside of a container, I'm sure, but something about the idea of the package being able to check its surroundings sounds like fun... I guess it could also get its rough location from cell towers as well... I'm guessing most of the time it would be indoors and GPS would do no good...
I have been in some of the USPS sorting facilities. Let's just say that any organization loosing a few billion a year can't have the latest and greatest equipment. They also scaled up from letters to packages, whereas UPS and Fedex started with packages in the first place. They do an amazing job IMHO...have you seen most people's handwriting?!?!
You may also notice that USPS does not have it's own fleet of cargo planes. (They use domestic carriers and yes, UPS and Fedex planes) In my experience, the people at the USPS are great, let down by their Congressional overlords. If you let the postmaster make decisions on how to best run the USPS and run it like a business, it would be doing a whole lot better!
