My wife just called, she's picked up the bird for Thursday. It's only 27.5lb's!!! That's as near as damn it 2 stone in English or 14.5kg in French!! berkeley me I'm glad I never met that motherberkeleyer when he was alive! I've been vegetarian for six months now, but after shelling out $100 for this monster I might have to fall off the wagon!

It's your wife's way of saying you have gone too far this time; she's reigning you back in to reality.
Better go check the fridge for a trace of bacon, too.
27.5 lbs? I suspect you could've thrown a saddle over it and ridden it when it was alive...
Edit: &@&^(*^!$! double postings.

4 bucks a pound? I think we got ours for 1.99 a pound.
100 dollars for a turkey is a bit effing ridiculous.

And my mom will go over the border after Thanksgiving and get a bunch for $.59/lb .

It was actually a little under that, but it's pasture raised free range organic from a local farmer. For our family that's cheap meat. All our meat comes from local known sources, she rarely even buys meat from Whole foods anymore as there are a lot of people who think their pasture fed beef is really pastured finished.
I won't frighten you with what beef or bacon coasts then.

Oh, there was bacon and butter too.
It may be sacraligouse, but I haven't really missed bacon. I didn't go veggie for ethical reasons so I have no problem with meat.

We got a heritage breed bird again this year, too. I think our was around $4.29/lb. Only about 15lbs, though - not a dinosaur like Adrian's.
Squirrel Ravioli.
That is all.
If turkey is so good, why don't more people eat it all year long?
You know what is good? Hamburgers. That is what I want for Thanksgiving.

In reply to Otto Maddox:
I barely find time to roast a chicken a couple of times a year... Turkey's good, but during the year most of my turkey intake comes as sliced smoked turkey for sandwiches, with the occasional roast turkey from the German place we go sometimes... Taking all day to roast one is not something I can do regularly.
Not that I get that wound up about turkey. It's good, but it's not like it's filet mignon or anything...

I pitched racks of lamb to the family but couldn't sell it - even for xmas dinner. Fools. I will make my own dinner on New Years.

Will a 27lb bird fit into you oven? I am sure it would not fit in mine but my oven is a little smaller than most.

Why?!? I don't understand the point of all this free range stuff.
I paid $0.89 per pound for almost 21lbs of bird.
If you've seen pictures of a factory poultry farm you might appreciate a free range bird. Factory farmed meat isn't healthy the way the birds/cattle/swine are raised. I get all my meat at a local super market with a good butcher shop. I never buy anything wrapped up in plastic. The worse is the meat which is hermetically sealed and the package is filled with C02 to keep the meat from showing its age.

Millions of reasons that I really don't want to flounder the thread with, but basically not wanting to eat hormones, excess antibiotics etc etc, or fed on crap like soy etc Also if you've ever seen battery farming with birds that have had their beaks removed etc you might have some concerns for it's wellbeing while the were alive. Go read the omnivores dilemma. I've been veggie for 6 months, but I'm strongly considering starting back on meat, with this particular bird being meal #1 of the new domain. Either way, we've tried to eat nothing but organic pasture fed for several years now, at home at least.

I have been in tons of factory farms. My family is all in the hog industry or butchers. I have helped slaughter lambs and pigs. I figure the animals are breed to be food for us and they wouldn't exist otherwise so I don't have any problem the factory farms. That being said I do like a good butchered piece of meat.
Also at least in the pork industry, hormones have largely been removed.
Saw a live turkey hen running around a Tucker subdivision last Sunday. That bird was bigger than a Maine coon cat.

I'll second that. Didn't make me want to be a veg, but definitely did make me think about what I eat.
Imagine how big that sucker was when it had it's feathers.
And we decided to go with a dead bird this year too. Trying to cook those live ones is a birch, and eatting them when they are alive? Forgetaboutit

can't stand turkey myself.... Mom will have the traditional turkey Thanksgiving meal.... me ? .... PRIME RIB ... thank you
I'm willing to pay more for good quality meat.
Point of fact: I think everyone should be required to clean a chicken or fish and cook it as part of the elementary school education.
