Anyone know where to get some good, discount CDs from a reputable place that won't steal my identity and perhaps my kidneys? I surf Amazon for box sets and individual albums and am building up a decent collection. I did the whole download music (legally) thing a while ago, but since then, it's gotten cheaper to get CDs and the better quality that goes with them.
But it's not an MP3 vs WAV discussion. I just need some good site suggestions where I can pad my collection with LEGIT CDs. Would help if I could find the elusive AC/DC or Black Crowes box set...

I have a local store that buys and sells used CDs. Cheaper than new, buy, rip, resell, repeat. Only winds up costing a buck or two per cd. Even if you're keeping them you might look for someplace similiar close to you.

Good idea, but I'll have to comb the area a bit for any. There was a local place downtown. Gone now, but they didn't cater to the blues/classic rock group I fit in. More of a hippie store, without Cream, Hendrix etc...

If Cream and Hendrix were easy to get, they wouldn't be Cream and Hendrix. There are Hendrix 8-track tapes worth hundreds of dollars. Early Clapton can run nearly as much.
God bless you for even caring.
Speaking of Hendrix, they're starting to periodically release "new" songs that were never released before or after he died. I'm listening to the latest, Valleys of Neptune, and it's pretty freakin' good.
I tend to buy used CDs of Amazon - for older stuff I try to find the older issues (ie not the remasters) as they don't have the volume cranked up and aren't as compressed as a lot of the newer releases.
In reply to BoxheadTim:
I HATE compression. I used to have a nice DBX 3BX Series III expander, but I sold it to fund our honeymoon. Cost me $2 at a thrift shop, sold it for over $500.
For used CDs, I go to thrift shops. We have one in town that has a decent music selection for it not being a music shop. Then we have the music store where you have to order CDs, but they probably have the vinyl upstairs.
MP3 vs WAV?
All hail FLAC! The grassroots codec!

How's FLAC different from WAV?

The local FYE here pretty much sells all new and used music CDs for $9.99 or down, and for a mall-rat type store, they have a decent selection. I also frequent our local indy music store(s).
FWIW, buying, ripping, and reselling even used CDs is still copyright infringement.
I berkeleying HATE. HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE Amazon. I really dig half - dot - com. No bidding, plenty of selection if you're not looking for the uber-rare, and I've only been e-screwed once, but I'm pretty sure that's because dude died or went to jail (srsly.)
Library. Its all free. If your local one doesn't have it, you can request it from other libraries. Did I mention its free?

Right! I said it wasn't an MP3 vs WAV discussion, but I didn't say anything about FLAC vs WAV
But smartassery aside, keep the suggestions coming. I never had a problem with Amazon and I've ordered quite a lot from them, and their prices are pretty good, but if I can find it cheaper I'm not that loyal to Amazon

Bring laptop and portable hard drive with you to library and rip entire library collection in a few visits.

FLAC is a lossless codec. It allows compression (unlike WAV), but when decompressed it becomes an exact copy of the original. So files are smaller, but no quality is lost. It's also open-source, which is always a nice thing to be.
If I was "backing up" CDs, I'd convert them to FLAC, and then if I wanted to put them on an iPod, mp3 for that. A little more work, but mp3s put back on an audio CD sound like ass.
I've got a really old iPod, somewhere, but I never use it. I just play the files off of a hard drive on my computer. I've got 1.5 TB of space on the computer itself, plus two 500 GB hard drives, so I'm not hurting for space too badly. I'll look into FLAC, though

Well the older iPods can be tricked into using FLAC, so horray! But seriously, take a look into FLAC. Not much of an audiophile, but I can hear a difference.

Good point - I haven't actually done this (too lazy) and I have plenty of old CDs to deal with.

I've had very good luck with these folk..

I shop thrift stores often. Now that everyone has iPods people are dumping their CD's and I have been finding lots of good stuff for .50-.99 cents each. Looking for specific boxsets its going to be more difficult, I use amazon as well. I add things to a wishlist and use that to monitor the price fluctuations items are selling for used, when something gets cheap enough I press the buy button.
I found a CD at the Salvation Army for $.35. Why else would I have bought Bel Biv Devoe?
I read this as discount crossdressers, huh. Like calling a transmission a tranny!
Man, I haven't heard anyone call them compact discs, since hell, 1986.
