So selling my hardtop. Craigslist add with no phone number, email only. Email comes in with someone asking if it is still available and asking me to message them on their phone number. The area code is from mid-south Florida and this is on the Asheville, NC craigslist.

Nope. They're gonna tell you they're out of the country and send somebody else to come get it with a fake money order or some other such nonsense.
I have a Charleston sc phone number and live in Minnesota. Answer it.
In reply to Daylan C :
what I figured. Joining a miata parts sell group on FB marketplace to hopefully get this thing sold.
Ummmmm I would answer it. I hate using email for CL. I prefer calling and talking to someone. Much easier and faster to communicate. I would call him but dial *67 first to block your number. If it is a Google voice answering it's a scam. If he picks up, he's probably legit. Interestingly, I'm usually leery of email-only ads such as yours, cuz those are usually scams. He's probably trying to get you to talk to him so that he knows you're not a scammer.
ive texted the number so we will see
If all they said is "Is it still available" without even mentioning what 'it' is, they're either a scammer or lazy.
No. Scam. They’ll want to text a code to see if you’re the real owner.
After posting most scams arrive in 2 minutes.

Wish they'd written in a way that indicated they were paying attention (and were human). Like "Is your hardtop still available" as opposed to "is it still available" even...
My wife likes to point out that area codes at this point only really indicate where you lived in 1998.
wasnt a scam, looks like I have it sold to someone else though. in less than 30 mins once I posted it in a Miata buy/sell/trade group on FB it has sold for asking.
When asked for a phone number I always say "you first"
I’d still say scam. That’s just not how normal people operate.
I literally have the hardest time getting people to call me with an out of state number. I'm not changing this number had it for ten years. I have to write in my email that it's a South Carolina number but I live here now. Everyone thinks I'm trying to scam them.

I texted a Chattanooga TN ad, from Milwaukee WI. Didn't get a reply, until I followed up the next day with, "I realize my area code is setting off scam warning bells, but I'm just a northern guy looking for a southern truck that hasn't been ravaged by Salt." Got a reply from him in five minutes. I own the truck, now.
When I do this on the buying end I always add “this is my work cell number. I live in xxx” and also specifically mention something about the item. I hate the “is it still available” texts and generally don’t respond to those if I’m selling.

I want that bike in the worst way.
I'm surprised that a FL area code would seem unusual in Asheville.
I moved from Bradenton, FL to Waynesville, and continued to treat some of the same pets.

yea thinking about it, it does make sense. I hate living in a tourist area.
“Looks like I have it sold”. Hopefully that means there is cash in your palm.

Still got. Next time in Chicago....
In reply to OHSCrifle :
yea I delivered it yesterday
I think the usual goal with sending an email requesting a phone number is to get the communication somewhere that keeps it from being monitored and reported to Craigslist, so they can pitch the scam over text or a call. A red flag that a scam is likely to be incoming.
