No I did not finish the Olds it won't be until later this year that it will be on the road.

I did however finish my most recent project, the Ruger 10/22 I got for Christmas. It started off as a base model 10/22 in a synthetic stock and now it hardly even resembles the same rifle. The trigger is now light and crisp with no over travel at all. The Mueller scope is crystal clear and has nice audible clicks when you turn the turrets. I can't wait to take it up to the range and try it out. It is also now setup to properly use the Aquila SSS ammo that uses a 60 grain bullet versus the standard 40 grain .22 long rifle bullet.

Modifications include:

  • GMR 1:9 twist sub sonic sniper barrel
  • Mueller APT 4.5-14x40 AO 30mm tube scope with 3 inch sun shade and Butler Creek flip up caps
  • Hogue OD green overmold stock
  • Harris bi-pod
  • Volquartsen target hammer (drops pull weight to about 2.5 lbs)
  • Volquartsen trigger
  • Volquartsen bolt lock

Comparison of Aguila .22 SSS on the left and a Federal .22 lr round nose on the left.

Total investment?

The rifle was a freebie (like I said it was a Christmas present), I had the bipod already as well.

  • Barrel $69
  • Trigger, hammer and bolt lock $65
  • Hogue Stock $55
  • Scope (sun shade was free) $145
  • Vortex 30mm rings $25

Total for bought parts $359 (rifle was bought on sale I believe for $169)

So over all total would be about $528 for the gun and parts and I think I had about $30 total in shipping. So less than you would pay for a target 10/22 from one of the custom builders out there though more than a factory target rifle. It was quite fun building it I must say and I can't wait to try it out at the range.

what's the benefit of the 60 grain long rifles?

In reply to smog7:

More lead hitting the target allowing for better penetration (this is around the same bullet weight as a .223). The subsonic speed on it is achieved partially by the bullet weight itself and stays at speeds low enough to stay subsonic even in cold weather (could be interesting getting a can for this thing ). Also it allows enough force when fired to reliably cycle the action on a 10/22, something that can be kind of iffy when using some subsonic ammo.

If you shoot the 60g bullets out of a .22 rifle with the regular 1:16 barrel twist it will actually cause this ammo to tumble and become less accurate.

Does the barrel have too much twist for the lighter stuff like the fast 32 and 36 grain bullets to shoot well?

How do you like the Muller scope?

My Savage MKII heavy barrel thumb hole also wears the same stock and is now set up to shoot these

so it can kill these

But if you have not tried the Velocitor you should, its all that and a bag of chips and only shoots 2 inches high at 50yrds when sighted at 100yrds (big deal in a 22lr).

My guess would be that something as light as a 32 would come apart before hitting the target coming out of this barrel. The 40g should be fine and maybe even some of the 37g HP rounds. I want to try some of those Velocitor rounds in both this rifle and my Marlin Model 80 bolt action. Rumor has it some of the new 40g "varmint" rounds have been designed with the fast twist barrels in mind and will work with the barrel quite well.

As for the Mueller my initial impressions are it is a very nice scope for the money. Its nice and bright and very clear, the adjustable objective and turret knobs are very nice. I will update once I actually have used the rifle in the field. It actually may get used for some ground hog hunting this spring.

aguila ammo is just soo expensive!

I like my $20 brick of 500 36 grain win. x-pert hollow points.

Its still cheaper than shooting magnums. I'm paying about $5 for 50 rounds ($45 for 500) of the Aguila SSS and $11 for a box of 50 .22 mags. I have about 2000 rounds of various .22 brick ammo laying around. Hmmm actually now that I think about it I might have more than that whenever the local Bi Mart has it on sale I normally pick up a box.

Then again my old Weatherby ate 7mm Weatherby Mags that cost $4 a round .

Glad you finally got all your kit in. Rifles looking good now. Most ppl say the faster twist barrels are just for that last bit of accuracy to squeeze out of the gun, so you could probably shoot hv rounds out of it fine. Fwiw, the AR barrels are usually a similar twist and stingers and other hv rounds are fairly accurate through them. Do stay away from stingers though as they can damage the chamber on your GM barrel. I'll post a pic of my ruger tomorrow when I'm on a real comp

On the ammo type note, I did an ammo test at the range a few months ago and tested something on the order of 18 types of 22LR at the 120ish yd outdoor range. I'm using a Savage MK2 BV w/3-x9 Bushnell refurb scope. I obviously got good results with the Wolf ME and MT, but I was surprised that my rifle liked the CCI SV's (1060fps IIRC) and one of the types of Win Super X (40gr HP 1280fps) weren't far behind and are quite a bit cheaper. The best group I got all day was 5 shots, 1.25" group. I don't know what the twist is on my MK2, but I don't think it's as much as your new barrel. I'll have to do some research tonight.

I too am interested in the Mueller scope. The APT model has Mil dots, right? I've got a mil dot 10x Bushnell and it's cool, I'd like to pick up something reasonably priced for the 22 too.

Think you got enough scope, there?

I guess that's so you can see the gnat's @$$ you're shooting at. And likely hitting.

I'm making do with a 3-9x40, 1" tube Redfield. 18" heavy barrel, Fajen laminate stock, Volquartsen trigger/sear, etc.

here's mine with a basic BSA 4-12x 40 scope, GMR 20" fluted stainless bull barrel, hogue black stock and VQ target hammer and auto bolt release. i've got a 3-9x40 BSA sweet .22 on the way that was on sale for 30 bucks from sportsmans guide that will either go on this one or my savage MK II.

It might cook off some rounds if you leave it sitting there

You will have to let me know how you like the Sweet .22 I have thought about getting one for the Marlin to upgrade the old 4x that is on it.

slantvaliant I think I could have gone with just a little more scope In all seriousness though the scope is beautifully clear and makes me want to get another for my Weatherby (though there I may go a bit more).

got the scope in yesterday. overall it looks to be a good piece, feels very solidly built, all metal construction, and the glass is very clear. i think i'll put this one on the 10/22 and swap the current 4-12 over to the $99 savage walmart special. only thing you might not like about it is that it only has turrets for 36 and 38gr HP, and 40gr RN ammo, so you'd have to do some testing to get it to work with your 60gr SSS rounds.

been considering another bolt gun in .17 HMR or HM2 aswell, but haven't found any great deals on one yet.

Hehe well I showed the rifle to my girlfriend's step dad last night. He is now trading me his Remington 597 in .22 Mag with a Bushnell scope for me to do the gunsmithing and for me to buy him the trigger group parts, he will buy all other parts. Well technically he will give me the money and have me buy the parts cause he does not know what to get. Sadly he spent like $150 on a crap NC Star scope that he will be stuck with until I can show him a thing about decent optics.

We were looking at stocks and Boyds is doing the Tacticool stocks again and that is what he wanted so I ordered one as well considering that is what I originally wanted.

Oh and the gf kinda hinted I might be getting the Plum Crazy lower receiver for my birthday at the end of the month

Stizzo I was actually thinking of that scope for my Marlin bolt so it would not shoot the 60g bullets. I may just have to order one. I think I have a thing for $10 at sportsmans guide.

Osterkruat fine looking piece of hardware care to share the particulars?

Hmmm so when are we going to start the GRM shooting club
