Get over it. Despite what you want to believe, Detroit has some great places, restaurants, museums, night life, arts scene etc. Tomorrow night is date night for me and the spousal unit. We're starting at Le Petit Zinc for dinner, then later going to the Ghost bar in the Whitney for a drink and the live music. I'm giving the bodyguard and swat team the night off as I have exactly ZERO concerns or worries about going downtown.
Touchy aren't we, maybe you might try taking tongue in cheek as just that, BTW I have been there, in fact within the past 2 weeks even

Do you like pizza? Supino Pizzeria in eastern market is excellent, be prepared to wait though, its worth it.

Race Rochester is closed too :( They were fun karts though. You HAD to drift them through the turns or they wouldn't steer. Kind of a slick road course.

OK, the humor didn't come through. It happens all the time. Detroit automatically equals zombies, crack heads, crime, deserted streets. Guilty before trial most of the time. Sorry for misreading you.

I'm saving the Henry Ford Museum for the whole family some time, so we probably won't do that because of that and the time constraint.
Good idea. We spent two days there and I wasn't enough. It's one of the few places we both really want to go back to
food: In Midtown near CCS there is a great place to eat and drink, Great Lakes Coffee - they've got great coffee and even better mixed drinks and beer. Pretty much anything in Mexican Village is good - I like the Pupuseria. Green Dot Stables has very good drinks and sliders, very inexpensive. Slow's BBQ by the old Tiger Stadium is excellent, but can be busy.
To do: If he's interested in the CCS, definitely take him to the Heidelberg Project. Detroit city museum is fun, the streets of Detroit exhibit in particular. Henry Ford/ Greenfield Village is far too big for the time you have. DIA probably as well, but it's free. Belle Isle is beautiful usually this time of year. Campus Martius in downtown is always fun, but it's best in the winter.

I'm 0 for 2 here. I guess I need to get out more often. I liked RR over K2K. More power (9hp vs 5hp) if I remember right. Yes, the oversteer was a good time.
Had an amazing trip to Detroit nice place.

So I heard from cousins in Warren... but Windsor is said to be the tits

Windsor is the place to go for (to quote Al Bundy) "The Nudie Bar". You get to see everything there!! Not just everything above the waist.

... and bring the mini mag-lite
Ah, yes... The Windsor Ballet.
I have not been there since the '90's. I am not sure if its reputation is still the same today but back then, full nude, high powered beer, low drinking age (18 or 19),and a favorable exchange rate.
Edit: ...and Cuban cigars.

I pointed out that the area you are from sucks.
But that does not take away the parts that are improving despite all the problems you like to point out. You should check them out someday.
Not everything sucks, and the good parts are not just in the suburbs.
And not taking away the parts that are terrible. You like to focus on that. And the news likes to focus mostly on the state of the management of the city. Make fun of the people noticing the small parts, but it takes SOMETHING to get it back.

You're kidding right? I spend more time in Detroit in a month that you do in a year I'd bet. Yes, there are parts that are improving, but you fail to see the reality, that Detroit is more than a square mile, I think there are 140 or so other square mile chunks.

You are right. In fact, it's like you are quoting what I've said. I know you're not because you don't actually read what others say. You like to insert assumptions and run with it.

I don't make fun, and while some of my posts seem to focus on the bad, maybe that's partially true. That's what happens when you live through the crap I've seen, it's a product of that city. Then you see people from the outside try to tell you how great it is. Have you faced-down a gunman in your kitchen? Have you consoled your sisters (yup, both of them) after being raped and having the cops just take a 10 minute statement for a report? Have you skipped school because you knew it was "kick a honkey ass" day?
so, you're right, it takes something to get it back. The issue is the people fleeing, it's been happening since the late 60's. The best way to get this change to happen is to change the people in charge, and get the neighborhoods full again. See, I've been there and done that. I LIVED there for the first 25 years of my life. I supported the city, I shopped there, went to school there. I paid the horrendously high city income tax. It appears I can't see the value and beauty that the city has to offer, like you do. I'm soo glad you could enlighten me. So, my question is, when are you moving in? Houses are cheap, real cheap. Surely you and your lovely wife could find a nice place to live and support the city.
Either way, I'm done 'discussing' this with you. You're 'that guy' we all know. The one we quickly realize that it's pointless to have a discussion with. I'm 'that guy' that is slow to learn. Others here have pointed those points out to me. I'm ok with that. Either way, I'll continue supporting the small neighborhood establishments that the media doesn't cover. Those I grew up going to while others will hear about Slows and jump on the bandwagen and be hip for a second.
Sorry to the OP for the threadjack. Next time you're coming through Detroit, let me know. If at all possible I'll make the hour drive down there and we'll see some cool stuff. I'll show you some pretty amazing (good) neighborhoods, including the (stunning) house that Henry Ford built for his mistress and some other out of the way stuff.
just a goofed up attempt at editing a spelling error above.
sure, they show you the taco, but at a distance. at least that's how it was last time i went to the windsor ballet. but down by DTW, you can get an old-fashioned if you buy 3 dances... well, that's what i heard from someone else, anyway.

The Whitney is incredible, be sure to go for a walking tour afterwards. It's huge, unbelievable amount of craftsmanship went into building that house.
Don't buy a house there, it might be on the demo list!
Of all of the car stuff Detroit has to offer, I'm far more interested in the history and architecture than anything else. I Can't help out with the car stuff, unless you want to check out Packard.
The Detroit Institute of Arts is very good, if you're into museums. They have some really cool Diego Rivera murals that are well worth seeing.
