Same...all I've done was wash off the polishing compound that dried in the grooves, and did a quick and dirty respray of the front bumper where I polished through the paint. Still got some orange peel that's going to be hard to get rid of completely. I would have called it good long ago if it was a personal build, but I'm holding myself to a higher standard and I'm not sure I can meet it. Commission work is stressful.

I swore off of doing commission builds after I volunteered to build a couple of Super Sabre's for some Thunderbirds alumni many years ago. Way too stressful for a hobby.

My Porsche hasn't progressed since I posted the first photo. I've been goofing off.

Many years ago I did a few commission builds. About a year after delivery a photo of one of them appeared in Scale Auto Enthusiast from a contest near the purchaser. It was claimed to be his build.....

I got one of these in the stash to build soon. I just ordered up the Scale Motorsports PE and carbon decal set for it.

Finally faced the daunting task of masking and painting the black trim across the sides and bumpers. I'm running low on Tamiya tape so I had to use some crappy blue tape to supplement (I taped a paper towel inside the body and another one on top, so the blue tape doesn't touch the paint, because I've had it mess paint up before)

Pictures of the results will follow as soon as I make sure I didn't screw it up.

The blue painters tape will react with lacquers. Says so right on the tape. Their automotive tapes won't. The teal colored stuff gives the crispest lines.

Interesting, never seen the teal stuff before. I also, uh, don't read labels sometimes. Whoops.

The Tamiya stuff is great though, maybe not as cheap.

Well, the trim turned out okay. Not perfect, but not too bad considering it was really tricky to get the tape on the front and rear bumper edges because of the shape. I managed to clean up most of the rough edges by gently scraping it with a plastic thingy.

Before scraping:

The process:

After scraping (I swear it looks better, my camera just won't focus for crap):

Il Progresso. To use a proper Italian headline. The Abarth is going to be done on schedule. Body pained, roll bar fabricated from 1/16" solder, not brass wire like I did on the Lotus 7. It will never see any load inside this. Clutch and brake pedals made, and door windows removed from the one piece glass. Masking all the body colors was a chore, but it worked OK using Scotch Magic Tape, the matt finish one, with the curves cut to shape with a #11 blade after applying the tape gently, burnishing down after the cutting. White duPont acrylic lacquer over the primer, then mask the roof, then Tamiya spray can yellow, then unmask the red part and mask off the yellow. Tamiya bottle red airbrushed, then unmask the green and repeat masking yellow and red. Airbrush bottle Tamiya "Park Green". then total unmask and Tamiya spray can gloss clear.

Shortly after I untaped the Mustang, I realized I should have done the window trim at the same time.

So I'm not gonna finish. After letting the Riv dry I started to clean up flash and mold seams. This is a cheaply made model based off an old promo most likely. I may actually pass on this one. Should have just stuck to Corvettes. Although the Camaro I got looks promising. So should I stick it out and build the Riv or move on?

That's the chassis/exhaust/drivetrain. The firewall is largely not there. And there's a huge tunnel through the engine block for the "axle." Not impressed. The Stingray I just did was similar but not as bad. I dislike these promo based kits.

The lack of detail is a bummer, but I actually realized that I don't look at the underneath of my models too often once they're done. Slap that crap together and make the body look pretty, that would be my approach. laugh

Every AMC model ever made is like that. Just roll with it and make it look good on the shelf!

Make a pretty curbside out of it. I am a detail freak, but sometimes you have to forego that for the effect on the shelf. There is little chance a better undercarriage version of this car will ever be kitted. Build it so the body shell can be easily removed so if the time and inspiration happens to build up an accurate chassis you can move the body onward.

I don't know if I'm going to start, nevermind finish. This month went by fast.

I'd love to start a dialogue of what the October Challenge car rules are so we can be prepared ahead of time.

Yeah, I think it would be beneficial to outline the rules so those of us who don't have a stash can get a jump on ordering and planning.

Are we doing a model version of a previous challenge car? something that could theoretically be one? working on an actual budget? grm model $20 challenge?

I like the idea of "$20 or less" build...maybe two classes? One class, spend as much or as little as you want in replicating a challenge car of the past...the other class, build something that fits the spirit of the challenge for less than 20 bucks. Unfortunately it'll be harder to find a cheap model at a yard sale or swap meet due to the circumstances of 2020, but there's still time to search the dregs of ebay for auctions with no bids. devil Refurbing someone else's already-built kit might be a good way to go here. Or refurbing your own...if it's currently in a state of total disrepair, call it scrap value and go ahead and rebuild it. I'm thinking anything in one's parts stash is fair game given the lack of model car junkyards as a public business. laugh

I'm currently going through my receipts...might have to call shipping costs exempt for this idea to work.

Ooh...here's half of an Avanti for potentially under 12 bucks. Toss in your engine of choice, adapt a suspension, carve some doors out of balsa wood...the world is your oyster.

Most of a Dodge for 20 bucks. (Assuming tax doesn't count towards budget.)

BMW 507 barn find! Surely this is too rare to be a challenge car? Oh but not in 1/24 plastic world. laugh

My Falcon Ranchero kit had one of those lame undercarriages. The finished product in the display case looks pretty decent though. You have to be cautious when it comes to AMT reissues. Fortunately Round2 puts the parts trees on the bottom of the boxes so you can see if you are getting a full chassis or a 1 piece bit of lame-ness.

Can I resubmit my Jeep for the under $20 Challenge? Pretty sure I only paid about ten bucks for it twenty years ago. laugh

But srsly, I like the idea of a cut-rate kit of some sort as a kit Challenge idea. I'm gonna start browsing.
