I liked the white flag is out comment. I could've used an announcer during SS5 when Nick caught up to me and was trying to put me a lap down and stay ahead of whoever was chasing him. I couldn't tell who it was that was behind me - wasn't sure if it was the leaders coming around to lap me or if was someone trying to pass for position. I would've let the leaders by right away instead of making them follow me for half a lap. After that I thought that the leader should be a different color on the map, but an announcer would've helped perhaps.

Announcments via text would be hard to get used to, but audio would be nice.

Heh, when i was getting lapped in the MX5 race last night i wasn't sure who to let by and who to try to keep behind me.

QUESTIONS:

  1. I gather by the above buzz that we ARE going to race in the rain @ Monza next week. True?

  2. Can we use dirt or snow tires if we can make them work for us?

  3. I practiced for the race with max. penalty on for some sessions. It seemed to me if I got all four wheels off course on the apex of a turn that I got a slow down penalty for shortcutting. Last night I tried to make sure I stayed on course all the time. I don't think I ever went inside an apex. So the question is, was max. penalty on last night? If so what causes a shortcutting penalty? It would have made a lot of difference in my lap time regarding how I went through the bus-stop and a couple of other possible short cuts.

  4. Do you have to finish the race before the time runs out in order to be able to see and save the replay?

COMENTS:

-Nick, I already owe you $1. Actually I should give 92 Celica fifty cents because I didn't know what you meant by triggers until I read his post. I didn't even know that the triggers would function like that. Of course I havent tried it yet, lol. I might not even be able to. I screwed my right hand up in a motorcycle accident and my rt. index finger won't open up all the way. Sounds like that's worth trying though.

-Several posts about cars getting hit by another competitor. I know I made contact with other cars several times. Sometimes it definately wasn't my fault and a couple might have been but I'm not sure. If I did any damage to anyones cars last night it wasn't intentional and if so tell me about it so I'll know what happened. I was hoping to be able to save the replays so I could see what happened.

There's going to be contact no matter what. Usually as long as it isn't someone blatantly punting someone else out of a corner, it's no big deal. Racing is rubbing, rubbing is racing.

Nobody pointed you out, so you have no reason to apologize. You did come down on me right before i did one of my D1 Grand Prix drifts down the straight, but i should have easily been able to avoid you without acting a fool like i did, so it's no harm no foul. (My tires were about done at that point anyways, and that's certainly not your fault.)

This isn't life or death. If you DO cause a problem and you're called out on it, a simple apology makes it all better. We're all friends here. E36 M3 happens!

Someone mentioned earlier that they are ALWAYS slower in the room than they are in practice. I'll echo that sentiment. I pulled a 2:24 flat in the Celica in practice, and during the race, even driving the balls off the car, i couldn't get below a mid 2:25. Even in the qualifying laps in the room, everything feels like i'm driving on ice and what little traction i have is gone.

Weird, but i'm not too mad about it. It's a game, and i imagine everyone would have the same handicap if one even exists.

My fastest lap during the race was faster than any of my qualifying or practice times. Finally got in to the 2:21's. Haven't noticed online being slower, maybe it is dependent on your internet connection?

Next week will be in the rain. I am hoping that I can leave some variables to the game. It would be an interesting race if the sun came out and changed the fast cars on track. I'm not sure what, if any, settings I can affect to make this a changeable weather race.

Brad, I think the weather changes by default. If you want to lock it in as either sunny or rainy there is a little check box to do so, but otherwise I think you can pick the starting weather and it will change as it sees fit. May rain the whole time, the sun may come out. That's how I think it works anyway.

Aircooled, I like that idea! I mean, I have my headset plugged in all the time so I could have done it but was unsure if you guys wanted to hear me lol

Yeah don't sweat it Graefin, like Celica said it's a game in the end and the internet sucks so shat happens! As with the triggers, I use my two middle fingers, then the two index for the R1 and L1. I love it that way, ever since I got the PS3, never looked back on the other button setups haha

For the SBC, your commentary would have been fine.

For MX5, I don't think it would have gone over to well:

"F40 in the lead"

"F40 still in the lead"

"Everyone else is behind F40, he must be great"

"I don't see anyone in front of me, I must be in the lead, I'm F40"

etc.

In reply to LainfordExpress: Next Wed. night. You've got a week to get practice. You'll get better. You can learn some things by watching what the better drivers do and some of them might even give you some tips.

After the tricky start on the banking, things were looking ok as the field slowed for Turn 1 on the first lap.

Aircooled and Derve took an unconventional line for T1.

Here are the first 4 places following T1 heading for T2:

Here is the contact between Dave and the Honda:

Here is the resulting aftermath:

Lap 1 T3 was a little rough for a good portion of the field. Dave and I ended up wide in the grass, then shortly after this was the scene:

As far as I knew things settled down for a bit. Aircooled was pulling out into a sizable lead. Apex was next and I was 3rd. Things stayed like that until Apex got a shortcut penalty at the bus stop:

As a result I passed him at the exit and moved into 2nd:

I stayed slightly ahead of Apex until Lap 10 came along and I decided to brake a little later for T1 because I thought I was slowing a bit too early: (Shoulda known better than to experiment on lap 10 of an 11 lap race)

Apex was right on my tail for the entire infield:

Then easily drafted past me when we got onto the banking. In a last ditch desparation move I tried to outbrake him for the bus stop: I was ahead of him for about a second, then ended up doing some farming!)

I didn't watch the close battle that was going on farther back, but I know there were several position changes and lots of close racing.

What do the judges say? Looks like i had a nice entry speed, lots of opposite lock, tons of smoke, and the form was impeccable! Do i go onto the next run, or do the spectators want ONE MORE RUN?!?!?!?!

Anyone have pics of my huge nasty D1GP drifts down the straights? I know Nick and i want to see those. I busted out laughing when i saw his chat comment pop up. "HOLY CRAP BEN!!!"

Actually, it would have been quite helpful. I thought I was leading that race by over 30 seconds. (only saw 3 other people)

I think one was early.... Lap 3 or 4. The other was 8 or 9 i think. They were both pretty epic.

haha oh yes I do! I say that was a solid corner Good technique

haha yeah when I saw that, it was sweet, just coming off the turn and just going banzai on the straight at full lock......then losing it I think me and chimp could give you run in a drift competition, my Isuzu's a monster

For the record, 92 was sideways before I tagged him. I do apologize for the touch. After the requisite pit stop from that contact, I promptly smacked the wall coming out of the pits.

Dave, I watched the replay several times and from several viewpoints. I would have the chalk it up as a racing incident, with neither party doing anything malicious or intentional. That being said, it doesn't look like an instance where an overtaking car needed to be more careful or patient. It looks more like a car turning into another car and smushing him into a wall. That is a very narrow part of the course, but you could've gone through there two wide. Myself and a certain Celica made it through T4 safely under similar circumstances)(yes, the track is wider there and there is no wall to deal with). Overall, I'd say this was an incident caused not by over-aggressive passing attempt gone bad, but by the poor visibility the game provides us to our sides. The blind spots are huge. Getting damaged early and having to pit sucks (I've been there several times myself), but I think the element of danger and uncertainty of having the damage set to high makes the racing more realistic.

Heh, like i said, i wasn't worried about it. If you watch the reply, i'm entering most turns in the MX5 sideways. The car scrubs off extra speed really easily then snaps back into place with no drama. It's faster for me, but hard on tires.

I know you tried to avoid me, otherwise the hit would have been way harder. I'm not mad.

Apex and Nick exist on separate planes of reality. They often collide, but never intersect. The god of the internet does not love them.
