So, I was wondering what you all thought about the new game?
I was a big GT fan all the way through 4, where I got XBOX and Forza 2.. then 3 waiting for GT5.
Im playing this, and I can see somethings are polished as all heck, and the rest is... uh, GT4.
I guess when you get down to it, The driving dynamics are pretty good, as long as you stay on asphalt and away from MR cars. What kills me, is the people you hear talkign how its the greatest ever... The AI is Circa '01. The multiplayer is basically a track day (which by itself would be awesome) with someone finishing first.
So frankly, no single player, no multiplayer... no racing, just firsts or DQ's/spin outs by stupid AI.
Is the worlds greatest racing game getting by on visuals (of the premium cars) and hype?
the worst is, it has little flashes of brilliance, but so short lived that It makes me wanna go back to FM3.
considering I still played GT4 up until GT5's release I think it's still pretty good...
GT was never about the racing. It's always been called the "The Driving Simulator". Now I suppose, you could call it "The Driving and Car Collecting Simulator".
What I'm finding strange in all the reviews/discussions I'm reading is that, if anyone so much as tries to compare any aspect of GT5 to Forza 3, the wrath of the internet comes down on them. Its almost like you are not allowed to mention GT5's most direct competitor, for fear that it might have ANY better attributes. Which wouldn't be allowed. Because GT5 is the only and best racing sim. Everyone knows that.
I just need to play it for myself. Does anyone know if best buy, gamestop, etc. have a copy to play on display?
GT5 is NOT a racing sim. I've had every version up to GT4. Forza does a much better job of racing. GT does a much better job on the WOW factors.
I totally agree on the whole premium cars are spectacular looking, the rest are GT4 looking. The sounds are cooler now, too, no longer vaccuum cleaners. Damage takes FAR too much intentional ramming and smashing and repeated bashing for parts to fall off, but tire smoke looks cooler. I kinda wish i had money for a 360 and forza, but if i did i'd probobly buy a bunch of iRacing time instead. If this game continues to get my finace into cars then i'm all up for it. We raced a bit today, me with a dpad and a challenger and her with the G25 and an STi on a rally course. Dang it's hard to drive a challenger on a rally course with no ABS and traction control off...
You don't unlock damage until something like level 40, and even then, the premium cars are the only ones where stuff falls off of them. You also have to unlock things like tire wear, which to me, this stuff should be available from the get go. If you run into things, you have to "refresh" your car in the GT Auto section. It can be as much as half the price of the car.

If money is any kind of an issue you'd never go iRacing. You don't own the game and can't play it on your computer by yourself. You continually pay for any play.

Wait, you have to unlock realism? It should be called GT5: The Real Driving Simulator After You Play it on Crappy Arcade Mode and Unlock the Laws of Physics One at a Time, if that's the case. So they took away doughnuts in GT4. Now they're taking away everything else?
you can get points on arcade mode? I haven't even bothered trying that mode.
so from what i've been reading, it takes lvl 20 to get half damage, 40 to get full damage, more than 20 to be able to adjust individual gear ratios, you can't change wheels on standard cars no matter what level, tire wear needs to be unlocked (unsure when, but i have it at 21) and all sorts of other things will be slowly unlocked with game progression. I hear it's something about Kazunori wants people to prove themselves to get the goods, and that once you have proven youself then the game is awesome. Also updates are continuously adding stuff. I always knew that Kazunori guy was crazy.
Wait, people think it sounds good?
Some, few cars sound okay. The rest sound horrible...
The nascar races sound like someone is warming up a bunch of printers

Seriously. I was all excited to be able to drive that course, only to find out that I have to slog through a race in 40hp VW buses that don't have enough power to pass anything, including each other, and I have to start at the back. I'm sure I could eventually win that race, but it's going to take hours of trying. That blows.

It really doesn't. Half an hour, tops, and you can do it. I've even done it a few times since then just for fun. It's hilarious. The only unfortunate thing is that they didn't model the body roll accurately enough.
A quick online review for those who are interested:
I entered a room that clearly stated "Muscle cars only" at Laguna Seca. Of course, since the online mode has almost no controls (I guess you can set HP limits if you want) about half the people in there were not in muscle cars.
I settled in with a Cobra and was doing pretty good laps when the moderator decided to run a race (it was mostly just practice laps otherwise). Of course the first corner resulted in about 90% of the field flying off the end of the corner (despite at least 20 min of practice laps!). I missed that, so that was fine. In approaching the 3rd corner I notice what appears to be a Veyron (in a muscle car race as noted), rocketing straight at me from behind. He of course center punched me, which resulted in a ridiculous CF of cars.
The rest of the time in the room was spent trying to get fast lap times (which are tracked). There was some pretty good racing with some cars I ran across on the track. Getting a clean run proved difficult, with a combination of poorly driven cars and some ahole in a Miata (yes, a Miata) who thought it was quite hilarious to run the course backwards and try to run into everyone. Apparently it was pretty entertaining for him since he did it for at least 30 minutes, I guess he Justin Beaber live DVD had gone missing so he had nothing else to do.
Very little control over what runs in the rooms - bad idea. No ability to boot someone - very bad idea. No ability to mute the microphone feeds (that I know of) very very bad idea.
I have read they wanted to delay the game again because the online was not developed (I highly suspect because they spend so much time implementing 3D that no one really cares about except Sony so they can get people the buy 3D TV's that no one really cares about), I would have to say this is pretty evident.... I will wait for some much needed updates.
P.S. - The online racing experience in Burnout Paradise is WAY better than GT5 at this point, and in general works much better with the typical online user since smashing into each other is part of the game.
im finding it to be a really weird mixed bag.
biggest improvement is vehicle dynamics and brake/throttle inputs are typically really good at manipulating mid corner attitude and much more consistently than previous games, though i cant seem to turn a mid engine car yet without going through said turn backwards.
like others have said, i'd rather have even just one simple generic interior dash view than a stupid bumper cam on 80% of the cars. i'm finding myself not really interested in even looking for used 'standard' cars because the view and feel of driving from the bumper just sucks after youve had a proper interior view. i wouldnt even care if it was a giant lego block dash with a ritz cracker steering wheel, just keep the views consistent.
AI seem to feel real racing involves pit maneuvers. sounds are ok, but forza sounds are WAY better and more diverse. for a while most cars in the GT series all end up sounding very similar at high rpm (mazda 787b being the wildest sounding car IMO).
where the game is just odd is the tuning... so i buy a $17k miata... and to get a camber or toe adjustment i have to buy a $15k suspension package?
forza is spectacularly superior in the modding and visual game. you can paint anything you want as much as you want... GT5 you have to pay to paint then you lose the paint color you used? WTF? no wheel changes, weights, widths, front/rear biasing, engine swaps, FF to FR or AWD swaps, multiple brake options, rollcage without full race modification...etc.
and while the different classes of racing has always been ok, when you have a classic muscle car class where you have to drop a minimum of 50k on a car why cant you make it a 3 race series? why is the truck challenge ONE race??? is it really any more work to add 2 more circuits to the event?
the gokarts are awesome.
Ok, disclaimers first: I am a GT fanboy, also my copy of GT5 is currently "out for delivery" so I haven't played the game yet. Here are my thoughts:

Premium vs Standard. Most people are complaining about this, but consider it from another angle... if PD had said we are going to make a new GT game with 200 cars, everyone would have been pretty excited. I see an internal meeting where someone said "lets just bring over all the old cars as is... give them 1000" that would be awesome. It is all about expectations.

Leveling. Good idea, sounds like bad execution. Since there are license tests in the game, that should control your "unlocks". Get all golds, get all functions. Get bronzes, get some practice at basic settings and come back later.

Online. From what I gather, this was the least complete part of the game. I suspect it will continue to evolve over the next couple weeks. However, I think I will miss the idea of Power Points to limit races. Passwords would be nice, so would groups / leagues.

Brakes upgrades. Unless you are going to a full race spec, brake upgrades mostly just reduce fade. The game would suck if you could only run 2 lap races until you upgraded your brakes on every car.

Other thoughts. I've always thought that it was cheating to allow ABS / TCS on cars that weren't originally equipped with them, at least until you've done some upgrades (brakes, ecu, etc). I guess that is the game part of it though.

I'm hoping to have a GRM league with GT5, anyone else intersted? In my mind:
- we would use GRM-ish cars (no Veyrons, etc);
- level the field by providing a minimum weight and maximum power,
- use an F1 point system, and run 1 event per track (including Rally)
- Racers would be required to declare and use 1 car for the entire season.
- There would be 1 points event per week, run at the same day / time.
- I was also considering a couple classes: Classic Motorsports (all cars pre 1970), GRM High HP and GRM Low HP
If enough people are interested, I'll organize it and schedule the events (it may require a new thread... if nothing else to keep up with the Forza folks).

I think the lego/ritz cracker dash idea is great. And I have been focusing more on the premium cars, because the standard ones can make me depressed. The premium ones, though, dang they look nice, and I think i read somewhere that painting any color any number of times becomes unlocked at a certain level? I can't wait for my light pink miata with bright red wheels...
I personally haven't been able to do online at all, but I suspect it's for the same reason i can't get online with my computer much either. My fiance has been having problems, too, and we're both using comcast so i'm blaming them. For now. And i'm waiting for more online updates, because I'm aware of online idiots and wish to avoid it. I like the thing that prologue did where you have to beat certain races to unlock certain online events, I think here they should do level limitations here. If you create an event, why not apply a level limitation to keep the newbs out?
Also, I agree that non abs cars shouldn't have abs (but i'm glad to have the option) and i HATE that i have to manually turn off tcs on every car individually. I wish i could set it as off by default.
I also kindof wish there were more tuning options, but as for sounds i must be the odd person. I like the sounds, but i might be used to the vacuum cleaner sounds of GT4. I chucked at the Nascar comment above.
Also yeah, why aren't there more races in single player? i had to buy a truck (or wait for a used one) and dump money in for 1 race, why not more?
And as for the zombie AI, I did the nascar series and i either finished 1st, or near last due to being spun/rammed off the track a number of times. I just figured it made nascar more realistic
And i'm up for GRM racing.
you bring up GT5P... is it me or did that actually feel like a more finished game? granted i do prefer the rear GT5 but so much of it feels rushed or less thought out compared to the 'teaser' version.
Actually, I was thinking that exact same thing. I think it's because all of the cars on GT5P were "premium" and great looking, and everything worked very well. GT5 has much much MUCH more stuff, but it's not all as refined as everything was in prologue. That being said, I prefer GT5 as is with lots of stuff that isn't refined, then if it were sold without the unrefined stuff.
oh yeah and the B-spec driver is an idiot. mine is level 6, doing a level 4 race in a hideously overpowered, great handling car and can't pass someone if there is a corner comming up in the next quarter mile.

anyone else sick of how completely stupid the AI is? if youre in an underpowered car that you can drive harder than them they smash and bump into you in braking zones, pit maneuver you, or just go really really slow through corners holding you up bad. and its not just one car that you can plan a nice pass on, its a train of idiots that means you have to pass 3+ at a time to make a hole, which in said underpowered car makes it not terribly fun. its almost as if the AI is driving with blinders on.
all other frustrations about the overall game aside, this one's bothering me the most as the driving aspect is otherwise very good. too bad since forza's AI though not perfect has already shown its possible to improve upon.
