Since the beard growing thread is so popular, I thought I'd start one on grooming beards. I'd be interested in your tips and tricks to keep your lucious face locks looking fresh.

Wash it. Keep it short. Use Beard Butter.
I don't have a super big bushy or long beard. And I don't have it as a "fashion statement."
I have a beard because I don't want to get up and shave every day.

I don't wash mine regularly but rinse it every day. Also, I really like Badger Beard Balm and Beard Oil.
Unless you grow like a Sasquatch, trim with scissors sparingly. It's easy to start trimming and then keep moving things in for balance only to end up with it super short.

Shampoo just like hair on opposite side of head.
Every other Sunday, use clippers to reduce length to "number 2". Reduce length under chin and on neck to "as short as possible".
That's my recipe.
Shampoo with hair shampoo. Beard oil if I remember. Trim it down every week or two with the 2nd from the longest trimmer setting that was in the beard trimmer I have. I should probably put more effort into it, but "meh".
I only grew it in the first place because I ran out of berkeleys to give for a while, and one of those berks was shaving. Then when I was going to shave it the first time, my wife said no - she likes it and said I'd look like I was 12 without it. The 2nd time I was going to shave it, I started under my chin and noticed I had a bad tan line from the beard, so that wasn't gonna work either. So now I have to wait until October or November to shave it. Don't think I want to shave it. So I won't.
^I don't think I've ever let my beard get that long, it just drives me crazy. I typically trim it back to 1/4" or 3/8" guard. Even at a 1/4" it's plenty thick, just makes the gray more noticeable.
If you've let it get long, then do this........even with regular maintenance, it's pretty damned disgusting how much dead skin and such gets caught up in it.
Like others, I grew my beard because I was lazy. That means I'm also lazy about grooming it.
Bought beard butter. Didn't use it.
Shampoo or conditioner as with the rest of my hair. Cut and edge it once a month or so when cutting my hair. Edge it once between cuttings. Haven't had a complaint yet.
