My dad is building another shed at their house. That got me thinking that I want to build one for here. I know I can build one cheap, as I've helped out on 3 of the ones he's built and he didn't go over $500 on any of them.
Anyway, how many sheds full of car parts do you have? I have one that's half car parts, and I have a bunch of cars that serve as storage. I'm looking to build a 12x12 with a high ceiling for overhead storage. That will let me get rid of parts cars because I'll have more storage room.
I won't be running power to the shed, but I will be using a solar lighting system built out of a bunch of stuff I have laying around.
If I do this soon, I can clean out my workshop building (being used as my main storage shed right now) and actually have a place for tools and some room to work.

your name isn't arthur jackson is it?
I have been fighting an ideological battle with myself regarding the addition of more storage at my place. We currently have both an oversized 2-car attached garage and a detached 3 car garage with one oversized bay. Between cars, projects, kids toys, and a garden tractor, there's just no space. I'd love to get all the kidstuff/lawnstuff out of the detached, but I know where that will lead, and at some point enough is enough. Or is that just complete rubbish?
Its a proven fact. The more shed space you have, the more E36 M3 you will keep.
Well, in our case, we have too much stuff for the amount of storage space we have. Adding a 12x12 or a 10x15 would put us to the point that I can use one shed as a shop again. Maybe if I built a 20x20 and put in a garage door, things would be perfect.
And there goes my project creep again, hehe.

i just want to build an 8x12(round numbers of 4, the floor would be 3 sheets of plywood with no cuts). the only goal is to get the tractor and other yard care stuff out of my garage, and possibly put a loft in it for extra car part storage so i do not have stacks of wheels. as it goes my garage is filling up and i have a ton of stuff at my dad's house in his barn and in the upstairs of his garage.

Exactly right, but isn't that the point?
You may want to look at the tax implications. In my town if you keep your shed under 100 SF floor space there is no added assessment to the property tax. They dont limit the number of them you can have.
I've started to adopt the "If I don't use it in a year, Throw it out." mentality. No need to have my money tied up in things that I won't use. I can invest that money and make more.

More room = more stuff!
This is why I bought a small house and nearly had the shed in the backyard hauled off. I have exactly NOTHING in the shed, and it's half full of my parents stuff.
Iggy, most stuff doesn't even make it a month with me that isn't a tool or something.

We built a shed (10x10 max per local code) for the g/f's house a few years ago and it was the best garage upgrade we've ever done. All yard crap lives out there now, leaving a lot more room for car stuff. I would also store seldom used auto-tools such as the engine hoist and tranny jack out there. Her garage has a large attic, and that's where car parts are stored (mostly in plastic bins).

To a point. I mean if you double your space, you will go out and find E36 M3 to bring home. I need another shed just to store E36 M3 my wife absolutely will not get rid of, but never uses.
screw sheds, I just about need to build a second garage to store all the E36 M3 in my garage. I could probably make due with a good shed-village, though...
Im interested in a $500 shed.

That's what I built, and it's been awesome. 8 x 12 with a 6' wide opening and 1' shelves down the 12' length. That's a LOT of shelf space, and a good bit of room down the middle for lawn mowers, wheel barrows, pressure washers, etc. All of the shovels, rakes, etc. live along the back wall on hangers.
The shelves are still probably 80% empty. Getting just the yard equipment out of the basement / garage was HUGE.

I have a 60x32 shop/garage. This is mainly for the nice cars and bikes.
Another 60x12 storage barn (used to be for horses) with an attic. This is storage for parts/projects, etc.
A 20x30 barn. Project cars go here.
Two car attached carport. DDs go here.
My collection has grown to the point where I need more storage for nice cars now. Hopefully the next house will have something like a 60x80.

Me too. I've heard its hard to do for below $1,000. The ones I've seeen for sale at that price (already built) I wouldn't touch. When I checked into gettting started on building one, the price of OSB and plywood went way up. Now I hear people can't even buy a decent 2x4.
Auctions are a wonder. I can build a decent sized (8'x12') For about $250. Just depends on how nice you want it. Where I live, as long as it is not a permanent structure, there is no taxes on it. So, it would be built on 6 2"x6" treated lumber(2 nailed together since a full 4"x6" stick might not get full through treatment) used as skids with an eyeloop attached to the middle skid for pulling.
My dad shops the cull bin at Home Depot and Lowe's. That's how he got the price down to nearly nothing. He's also bought a couple of the shed kits at Lowe's on clearance. He payed $350 for one of them, a 10x10.

Not always an option due to code limitations. At my house, I have a 8x8 shed. I've researched my local codes and I could replace it with a 10x10 (100 sqr ft) without any problems. Any larger (or if I want to add a shop) then I'll need to submit to the planning board. I have a small lot and most areas have coverage limits so there's no guarantee I could build anything at all. If you live in the sticks, much of this goes away... but if you live in the suburbs, it can get complicated...
I've got the big(ish) 12x20 cement floor shed. The two 10x20 hoop house sheds, that collapsed on everything in them. The 12x20 fabric shed with a plastic sheet floor (that works remarkably well), as well the 12x24 one sitting in the box on the porch.
I've too many sheds, and way too much stuff in them. I don't enjoy most of it, I've lost lots of it, and spend countless hours trying to find things, or rearanging them into whatever I think order is.
Really, I am trying to par it down to a manageable level so I can enjoy my time. Which also includes getting rid of projects and replacing them with things that actually work. A darn hard concept for a junkhound like myself to grasp. But if I never play with something, what good is it doing me? From a broken chainsaw that I'll never actually rebuild to a riding mower that spends more time being fixed than actually cutting grass, to gocarts that are rotting and have never been ridden.
