Hmmm.... If they "do away" with the penny, will it become merely a chunk of metal that can be sold for scrap or bullion?
I deliver pizza on the weekends and have a rule that any change that hits my pocket, stays in the pocket for the big jar at home.
This jar is swap meet money for one big swap meet in Dallas.
Pennies have rarely made the trip to the bank to be cashed in so they have built up over the years.
I could handle 1.5 times face value!

Anyone who understands the law of averages will accept it.
You presume businesses would operate that way, but unfortunately the prices would change by a cent to 2 so that they got to take advantage of the averaging laws. Guess who will come out on the short end of the stick?
Just buy three of whatever you want. They charge 4 cents to make the penny, you buy 3 for 12 cents and stick it to the man for 3 cents. Booyah!
I run a business. I couldn't price what I do to end up making money, since noone buys just one thing here. Two cents is not going to change my life, particularly since I understand averages.
Besides, is everything in the world not priced at 99 cents anyway?

I don't think they're actually worth that, that's just what it costs to make one.
...I could make a wisecrack here about the government spending 1.5x to make something that's barely worth a fraction of what they say it is, but nah, that's too easy.

Does that mean we have to use ass nickels now?
Possibly safe for work. Comedy Central Azz Pennies.
Goddammit I thought I was going to be the one to post that first. Maybe my favorite comedy sketch ever.
Maybe they should keep making them, but change the 1 to a 2. Suddenly they would make money on every coin and people using cash wouldn't get a 4 cent reaming every time they buy a popsicle.
Oh, and I have a business and I am going to mark everything up!
money money money, it must be funny......
Ok, leave the tinfoil hats at home.
They're still legal tender, they just aren't going to make them any more.
There's so many damn pennies out there now, I doubt we will run out for some time.

I don't think they're actually *worth* that, that's just what it costs to make one.
That is the reason they are plated zinc now rather than solid copper. In solid copper form the metal value can exceed the face value.

Why don't you penny savers put all your dollar bills in a jar when you get home each day. You'd get ten times as much E36 M3 when you emptied the jar?
Sarcasm filter or not... I'm a commuter, and a broke one at that. Pennies in the jar at home, nickel or larger stays in the car. Dollar bills and quarters to NHDOT at the toll booth, nickels and dimes stick around to ensure I can take the highway home and for the vending machine at work when it's four days until I get paid and there's $13 in the kitty until then.

so everything gets inflated to the next nickle?
This. I think getting rid of the penny is stupid.
It costs more than a penny to make a penny. THAT'S stupid.
